Nox and the Cows

November 18, 2025

On Sunday (November 16), by the afternoon I was feeling better. In the morning, I suffered from the aftereffects of the migraine. I felt exhausted and almost like I had a hangover.

In the morning, Bruce climbed on the roof and blew the leaves from the gutters.

Since I was feeling better in the afternoon, Bruce, Nox, and I went for a walk around the yard.

Nox got to see cows! Nox was so excited that she was shivering. Every time Bruce started to move away from the cows, Nox would let out a whine, clearly letting him know she needed to keep watching the cows.

We have no idea why Nox thinks cows, horses, goats, sheep, and donkeys would be fun to play with. She loves seeing these so much larger (to her) animals. Nox would chase chickens given a chance.

Bruce took Nox and sat on the front porch.

Dad, who are you waving at?

The big oak out front has beautiful yellow leaves.

Looking up at the branches of the oak tree.

I took a look at the backyard and gardens.

The basil stems are woody and the roots don’t want to come out.

I walked back to the front.

I spent some time working on my drawing.

By the evening, the wind had blown all the leaves from the neighbor’s history tree close to our north fence.

Reflected Sunset Light

Notice the big pile of leaves Bruce swept up in the leaf sweeper.

  1. It is a shame about the birdbath. Perhaps you could set the right size of flowerpot in the hole and use it for a planter stand. It was really a beautiful piece. The sunflowers are coming along nicely, too!

    1. It was a lovely piece. The glass is cracked on one side, so I don’t think I could put something in the hole. I originally thought I might be able to do something with it, but once I realized it was cracked through, my idea wasn’t going to work. I did think about saving the pieces and creating a mosaic, but I have decided I won’t get around to it.

  2. I’ve often thought that cows are like big dogs in many ways. When we were in Utah, Max loved to visit this one particular cow who admittedly had a very cute face and short horns (we nicknamed the cow “Horny’). Horny would always run over to the fence when we visited and, like Nox, Max refused to leave his friend. Looking at your photos it’s pretty clear winter is well on its way towards the homestead. That’s a great oak tree; come spring Bruce can add a swing!

    1. I grew up on a dairy farm. Some of the cows were very friendly and liked to be scratched. We had one we named “People Lover” because she loved people so much. Nox doesn’t have an attachment to any particular cow.

Yes, winter is here. We had our first hard freeze on the 10th and 12th. It got down in the low twenties. It warmed up again.

We do love the big oak. We’ve talked about hanging a swing up.
