A Visit from My Sister and Her Husband

March 30, 2025

On Thursday (March 27), I had a doctor’s appointment for my physical. My new doctor is going to recommend some doctors in the area. I have a toenail that is trying to become an ingrown toenail. I also need a neurologist in the area who is familiar with my condition.

After my doctor’s appointment, my youngest sister and her husband came by. They were taking a short vacation in the area to see waterfalls. Before she came up, I suggested she could see Tuscumbia Spring Park since the waterfall in the park is gorgeous. I also suggested she could see the Wilson Dam Waterfall.

My sister and her husband enjoyed the beautiful waterfall at the Tuscumbia Spring Park before coming over. She thought the park would normally be a great place for a family outing. She mentioned the park was in the process of being cleaned up after the tornado. Some downed trees and branches were being cut up. The carousal had been damaged as well. I hope it can be repaired.

We showed them around Blackberry Homestead. My sister was fascinated by all the different wild plants we have growing.

My sister was amazed at the carpet of violets and asked if I was going to make violet jelly. I had never heard of violet jelly, so I told her, “Not this year.” Maybe I’ll make violet syrup, similar to lavender syrup I made.

My sister agreed to come back the next day and go see the Wilson Dam Waterfall with us.

On Friday morning, we (including Nox) drove over to the Rockpile Recreation Area. My sister and her husband followed behind in their car. They planned to leave after seeing the waterfall. They wanted to stop on their way home to see another park.

Nox didn’t want to walk, so we put her in her backpack. She was happy to look around from Bruce’s back as he carried her. She saw dogs and was excited to see them.

We saw several birds, including an eagle. We weren’t sure if the eagle was a golden eagle or an immature bald eagle. Since we saw a full grown bald eagle last time we visited Wilson Dam Waterfall, we think the eagle we saw was a juvenile bald eagle.

There were American white pelicans, cormorants, egrets, great blue herons, Canada geese and gulls.

After seeing the waterfall, we did a short walk on the other side of the boat ramp. We used the hiking trail to cross a stream on bridge over an old train trestle. Several flowers were blooming in the area.

The trillium was just starting to bloom. Dogwoods and redbuds were blooming at the edge of the woods along the road.

After we walked back to our vehicles, we said goodbye with hugs and promises to see each other again soon. My sister and her husband headed out and we headed back home.

Once home, I made a chunky vegetable pasta sauce with Italian sausage.

Bruce and Nox took a nap together.

I set up an appointment to get a blood draw on Saturday morning for the bloodwork my doctor ordered.

  1. Sounds like a nice visit. We have visited Tuscombia Springs Park! I even wrote a post about the “Sacred Tears” sculpture there. Most of the birds have left Big Cypress. Perhaps they are the ones you saw.

    1. It was a great visit. I am so glad she came up this way on a short vacation. We are about 5 1/2 hours away from her. She and her husband enjoyed seeing other sights in Mississippi and Alabama on their trip.

The “Sacred Tears” sculpture is a beautiful and very moving reminder of a terrible tragedy.

I know the sandhill cranes stop in the area when migrating. I hope to see them again. I loved seeing them when we were wintering in Florida.

    1. I was happy my sister was able to come by and see Blackberry Homestead. I am planning on growing an Arkansas Black Apple tree for her. She is very excited that I can grow apples.
