Where Did Our Driveway Go? Creek Overflowed and Flooded the Front Yard

March 15, 2025

We’ve been having some ferocious weather today: a tornado watch, severe thunderstorms with warnings of flash floods and hail, a tornado warning and another tornado warning.

We got some small pea sized hail, not the ping pong ball that was suggested.

After the tornado warning expired at 3:15 PM, I looked out the front window. Our front yard was flooded! It is a very good thing the house is up on the hill!

Nox desperately wanted out, so we let her out in the front by the house. This is the least wet part of the yard. After Nox made her pee stop, we put her back inside.

Bruce and I walked down the driveway to the edge of the flooded driveway.

The water was running over the road to the north of us. Water was on the road on the side next to us, just to the south of us. We could see the water being splashed up as the cars went past.

The birds were at the feeders during the brief break in the rain. It started raining again. One bird took shelter under the porch.

Give Me Shelter

It stopped raining for a bit and we went back out. The water had gotten lower.

We looked out a bit later and realized we had our driveway again and most of the floodwaters were gone.

It may flood again since we are getting more rain.

      1. Nox doesn’t like moving water. We took her to the beach a few times. She enjoys the sand and the puddles left behind, but she didn’t like the waves after experiencing them once. We kept her away from the fast running floodwaters as we weren’t sure if she might decide to investigate. The water looked still in parts and she could’ve thought that was okay.

      1. Based on our measurements, we got 6” of rain. While the ground was soaked and incredibly soppy, it could only absorb so much. A lot of that rain water ran off into the nearby creek which would take it into the Tennessee River. Our neighbor’s cow pasture was flooded as well.

    1. We thought it might be a chance the front would flood since there is a creek that cuts through a corner of the property and feeds into the ditch. This runs into the larger creek about 500 to 600 feet to the south of our driveway.
