The Remains of a Windstorm

October 24, 2025

On Saturday (October 18), Nox needed to go out at 4:30 am. On the horizon, the moon was an orange sliver through the pine trees. The moon didn’t come out clearly in the picture, but you can get the idea of what I saw.

The red pineapple continues to be a delight.

From the living room, I saw a bluebird in the bird bath. I was able to get a picture through the window with a screen. As I stood up to try to a get a picture of the bird through the clear section of the window, he flew off.

In the afternoon and over night, we got a windstorm with a little more than an inch of rain.

The next day (Sunday, October 19), was a beautiful, sunny day. It was also a cool day, with temperatures in the 60s.

I spotted a bluebird on the top of the tomato trellis.

Some dead branches came down.

Bruce moved the branches to the yard by the burn barrel.

I made sourdough loaves and the house smelled wonderful. While the bread was rising, I worked on my drawing of “Juneau in Wild Sunflowers”.

On October 20 (Monday), I worked on my drawing.

I called it quits at lunch time. I had a box of flower bulbs waiting for me on the front porch.

After opening the box of flower bulbs, I took Nox out back. Here are some pictures of Nox, wandering around doing Nox things.

More pics of the red pineapple.

Bruce did cleanup in the back pasture while I worked on my artwork. Some of the cleanup was chainsaw work on Pine Tree 2. I went out to look at all the work he did.

He removed blackberry canes and dead branches from around one of the sheds.

He cut and moved big branches from Pine Tree 2 into a pile.

Here’s a picture of Pine Tree 2.

I said, “Oh, you cut off some pieces of the trunk on Pine Tree 3.” Bruce said that he did that a few days ago. Hmm. Okay, I think he mentioned it. I may have thought he was telling me he wanted to do it, not that he did it.

Pine Tree 3 and Bruce

In the left side background of the picture above, you can see the pile of chips after the Friday (October 17) session of chipping.

After showing me what he did, Bruce got to work clearing around Pine Tree 2. I moved the smaller branches from around the tree while Bruce moved large logs. I added to the pile of chippable branches for Bruce’s next chipping session. I moved the branches that need additional cutting to the grass around the pile for easy access.

It was nice working in the shade. With the branches and logs cleared away, Bruce was able to mow next to the trunks of Pine Tree 2.

Once we were tired, we headed back to the house. I stopped to get a picture of a violet blooming.

After supper, we sat in the living room and read. I noticed the blue shadows on this wall, along with the shadows from the cast-iron porch supports.

The sunset was simple, but pretty, making a nice end to the day.
