Sunrise to Sunset

October 16, 2025

On Friday (October 10), Nox got me up at sunrise, 7:00 am. Nox needed to go outside to pee. While Nox wandered around off the patio, I watched the beautiful sunrise through the pine trees.

After Nox finished her stops, she trotted back to me, ready to go inside. Once inside, she wanted a treat. I was kind enough to break a treat in half and give it to her. She seemed pleased and we went back to bed. I read while Nox caught a few more zzzz with Bruce.

After breakfast, I cleared more blackberry canes to make it safe for me to dig out the daffodil bulbs. I tossed the canes to the side to collect later. Blackberry canes are the devil to deal with. At least there weren’t any fire ants for me to step in.

Bruce headed into town on his motorcycle and picked up a set of e-clips at the auto parts shop. He put the chainsaw back together. He did some clearing around Pine Tree Two and then he chainsawed away.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the seeds of radishes, arugula, and Japanese mustard greens planted on Monday had sprouted.

The sunset was beautiful with glowing orange and yellow clouds and purple streaks.

  1. The shorter winter days mean that I am occasionally actually up at dawn. One advantage – and I feel there are very few advantages in leaving bed so early – is that I can now witness the woodpecker which visits the garden very early each day. Woodpeckers are very rare here and have only spread to our area in the last few years. Now that I am up and moving I suppose I’ll do a bit of gardening as the forecast rain seems to be holding off.

    1. I agree with you about leaving bed so early; I do enjoy sleeping in. The big advantage to an early start in the summer is that we can work in the relative cool before the heat makes it unpleasant. I do enjoy the woodpeckers we have. In the spring, we had a flock of yellowhammers (northern flickers that are yellow-shafted) stay for a while. We also have a downy woodpecker and a red bellied woodpecker that show up now and then.
Enjoy your day! I am about to head out to do a bit of gardening myself.

  2. Enjoy your property! You are taking such good care of it. I remember the old pictures. Do you know what happened to the former owner? I always find this interesting. We have lived here for over 2 decades but our house had a very interesting story behind it but only 2 owners before us.

    1. It was a couple that owned the property. He got sick (neighbor’s didn’t say with what) and couldn’t keep up with it. The neighbors helped out as much as they could. He died and his wife stayed for a while. She wasn’t able to deal with the property and had it auctioned off. It was bought by a realtor who did a lot of work on the house.
