Pulling Poison Ivy and Finishing Planting Potatoes

May 3, 2025

On Wednesday (April 30), I got up and got dressed in my poison ivy pulling gear. I set up the washing machine to be ready to run once I tossed in my coveralls, hat and socks I was wearing when pulling poison ivy.

I lined a large trash can with a contractor bag (formally known as a curtain). I am making good use of the contractor bags that hung as temporary curtains in our master suite.

I pulled up poison ivy from 7:45 AM to just after 11:00 AM. I filled the contractor bag full of poison ivy, closed it up and rolled the trash can down to the road for garbage pickup.

Bruce saw me heading back to the house. He opened the front door for me.

I very carefully tried not to touch anything until after I had washed off the gloves with Technu. I pulled off my gloves then took off my coveralls. My coveralls, hat and socks went straight into the washing machine. I washed my hands with Technu and headed for the shower. I washed with Technu to remove any of the poison ivy oils from me.

I carefully wiped down my shoes and shoe laces with Technu. This caused me to wash my hands with Technu again. Am I paranoid? You bet!

It seems to have worked, I didn’t develop the dreaded poison ivy rash.

After lunch, I took a nap. Nox was uncomfortable during the night and needed a lot of attention. She kept both of us awake a good bit of the night.

When I woke up from my nap, I decided to finish planting the rest of the seed potatoes in my latest potato tower.

It was a lot of work due to mixing up the dirt, but I completed planting the potatoes.

I didn’t take a single picture on Wednesday.

I’ll just leave you with a picture I took of my dirt mixing set up from another day.

  1. You must have a lot of poison ivy if you are still working on it. We have more than I wish we did, but fortunately, most of it is not anywhere we have to be, so we have had no encounters with it. Now ticks on the other hand…

    1. We have soooo much poison ivy. I am planning on pulling more tomorrow. I am trying to focus on the areas we are actively using.

We have ticks as well, I’ve found three ticks on me after pulling poison ivy in the wooded area.

  2. Pulling up the poison ivy sounds like a horrible job, but I don’t know what other option there is. You will never run out of things to do living on that big property and having a big garden!

    1. It is a horrible job. After I pull poison ivy for a while, when I close my eyes, I see it behind my eye lids.

Bruce is so allergic that I really don’t want him pulling it up.

We looked into buying a poison ivy spray, but discovered it is a spray to kill broadleaf plants. It would damage the oaks and pecans. We decided to skip it.
