Heading Out to a Harvest Host in Mississippi, R & R Vineyard

April 29, 2024

On April 20 (Saturday), we got the RV hitched to the truck and headed out from Pecan Grove RV Park.

It was cloudy with rain expected along the way. We lucked out and were able to get the RV hitched before it started raining.

We headed to Mississippi on Hwy 65 curving around Lake Chicot, then we continued onto Hwy 82/278 on around Lake Chicot, then over the Mississippi River on the Greenville Bridge.

Such a Beautiful Bridge!

I did take a few pictures as we drove into Greenville, Mississippi before the rain started.

It started to rain and it rained on and off for our trip to R &R Vineyard. I noticed that the host would provide a home cooked meal if requested, so I texted and asked it they could provide a meal.

The host replied yes, so dinner was taken care of.

When we arrived at the vineyard, it was just after 5:00 PM and it was raining. Bruce asked me to use my phone to connect to our controller to check our batteries. We had plenty of juice, so we didn’t need to use the power the host was offering.

Dinner was almost done when walked up to the porch. We asked where we should park and we moved the rig and leveled the RV. Bruce put the steps down, entered the RV, looked at the controller and discovered in the brief time between me checking the batteries and getting parked, the controller was not working. That meant we couldn’t put out the slide or turn the lights. This meant we couldn’t sleep in the RV since we couldn’t get to our bedroom.

We shrugged our shoulders and decided we would sleep in the truck if we couldn’t figure it out.

After we walked back to the porch, Bruce ordered a flight of wine. He wound up drinking some of the flight with the meal. He was impressed with the large pours.

The broccoli, mashed potatoes with fried onions on top, roasted carrots and baked chicken breast provided for dinner were delicious. It was so nice to have a hot meal after being in the rain.

The host offered suggestions about what could be the problem with the RV. I suggested we power up the generator to see if it would work.

After our meal, Bruce ordered a case of wine and paid for it.

We went back to the RV. Bruce opened up the front storage bay and reached in to feel if the 50 amp breaker had flipped. I held the door up so it wouldn’t fall on him. He could tell the breaker hadn’t flipped.

With our limited access to the RV, I was able to grab a blanket out of the my desk slide. Bruce grabbed the two litter bottle of drinking water.

We set up camp inside the truck and tried to go to sleep. It just wasn’t working and finally the rain stopped.

Bruce decided it couldn’t hurt to run the generator. I held up the front bay door for him while he got the generator started.

Success! The controller started working!

We got the slide out! Brought the blanket back in and put it on the bed. The low for the night was expected to be in the lower 40’s F. After we were set, Bruce turned off the generator.

We had put Nox’s bed at the bottom of the bed. We gratefully went to sleep. At some point, Nox started crying to be let into bed with us. Since it was cold, we did let her sleep with us.

In the morning, Bruce ran the generator to power the controller and to close the slide.Once the slide was closed, he turned off the generator and brought up the landing gear.

We pulled away knowing we had a problem we would need to investigate at out next stop.

We headed to Oxford, AL.

  1. Glad that all worked out okay! I had never heard of R & R before your other post on it. I guess the closest I have been is Amory or Aberdeen! I do love that Greenville Bridge, though I also loved the old one, too. Guess you are long past Oxford AL by now!

  2. The RV slides do provide pros and cons. We can get to our bedroom and bathroom with the slides shut, and I can just barely get into the living / kitchen area, but we cannot use that part if the slides are shut. Technically we could sleep in the RV with the slides shut, but so far we have not needed to or tried to. We do have a problem with one of the slides where one side seems to get stuck. Wayne has been able to get it to work with a lot of starting and stopping (and swearing) while trying to open or close it, but we need to get it serviced. If we only needed a trailer for shorter use, I might want to get one without slides despite the smaller living space. I hope your issue is not too much of a hassle or cost to get fixed.
