Bruce on the Way to Denver, CO

October 13, 2024

Yesterday, Bruce drove me to the rental company at the airport. I rented a car to drive while he is traveling to Denver, Colorado and back again.

Bruce made up lists of things to take and to pick up. He also made a list of things to do in Denver.

Bruce headed towards Denver after eating breakfast.

A bit later, I went through the fridge at the RV and picked items I didn’t plan on using anytime soon. I put these in a cooler.

I put Nox’s bed in the back seat of the car and hooked her harness into the seat belt. I put Nox on her bed and fastened her in. We headed to the house.

Once we got to the house, I started putting the food in the fridge from the cooler. I put food in some clear bins I brought during Prime Day. I am going to see how well the clear bins work for keeping the fridge organized and making it easy to find food.

I had planned to move the middle fridge shelf up a notch, but the shelf doesn’t seem to come out, even with both doors open as far as they’ll go. I’ll take a look at the manual tomorrow.

Bruce called me a various points in his trip, as he stopped to fuel up or pulled into rest stops. The last time he called, he was in Kansas. He can go a lot faster when not pulling the RV.

Nox and I had a peaceful day. I picked up sticks in the front yard, making a burn pile. I also picked up large rocks (from the mower’s perspective) and put the rocks by the burn pile. I’ll see if I can find enough rocks to completely circle the burn pile.

While walking around the yard looking for sticks, I noticed a large mass of white asters blooming. I went closer for a look and saw a lot of bees and this buckeye butterfly. Its wings are a bit tattered.

One of the sticks I picked up was hiding a fire ant mound. I felt ants crawling on my hand and looked down in time to see the fire ants start to bite. I dropped all my sticks and focused on getting the bitting fire ants off my hands. I did get bitten in several spots on my hands.

I picked up sticks and rocks for about an hour and a half, maybe two hours.

I decided picking up rocks and carrying them in my hands was a pain and found my bucket. Tomorrow, I am going to put the rocks in the bucket and not carry them in my hands. I am also thinking a Radio Flyer wagon would be good for me. I’ll see how the bucket works tomorrow.

After I came back inside and drank some water, Nox wanted to go outside. I sat on the back step and watched her meander around. Our neighbor came outside and was doing something outside. Nox got excited and made wood noises at him. Nox was told off about this.

A large pile of cardboard boxes was accumulating in the corner of the dining room. I put the boxes in the barn. I plan to use them to create garden beds. I’ve had great success putting down cardboard and then adding three to four inches of mulch on top of the cardboard.

Nox decided she needed some attention and wanted to be held. I sat down and she wanted to be in my lap. She went to sleep and I sat watching YouTube videos on what to expect from my induction range.

After Nox woke up, we went outside so she could have a potty break. I decided it was time to head back to the RV. Nox was excited when she realized we were heading back to the RV.

Bruce just called to let me know he is in Topeka, Kansas and that he has a room for the night.

    1. First, your cardboard shouldn’t have any colors on it. Black is fine; it is made from soybeans and is safe. Cut the cardboard to the shape of the bed you want. Wet the ground you want as your garden bed or wait until after a rain. Lay the cardboard down on the bed area. You can put two layers of cardboard down. The cardboard smothers the grass and weeds. Once the cardboard is down, put 3 to 4 inches of compost or leaf mulch over the cardboard. If you can find more compost or leaf mulch, you can put 5 to 6 inches on top of the cardboard. If you used compost, you can grow shallow rooted plants right away. Think lettuce, spinach, radishes, arugula, turnips, mustard greens, etc. if you used leaf mulch, it needs to break down some before you can plant much. The cardboard breaks down surprisingly quickly.

  1. Thank you for sharing the update. It sounds like a productive day on all fronts. A couple of years ago, I bought a Gorilla Cart from Home Depot, and it has made my life so much easier. It can be converted to a flat bed trailer, or raise the rails and tailgate and haul rocks, leaves, debris, wood, etc. I really love it. When the rocks are dirty, the screen allows the water to pass through so I can wash off the rocks or bricks. Now that it is cooler, I have a cart full of bricks and plans for an additional parking space across the drive!
