Roasting Hotdogs in the Campfire

February 16, 2024

Flat Creek Family Campground and RV Park has nice fire rings and picnic tables at the camp sites.

Nox Hanging Out by Fire Ring

Since we had a nice fire ring and pleasant weather, we decided to have a campfire.

On February 7, we bought hotdogs in anticipation of roasting them over a campfire. Bruce started to put hotdog buns into the cart. I stopped him by saying, “I’ll make hotdog buns.”

On February 8, I made the hotdog buns and some hamburger buns to use later.

On February 9, Bruce and I headed to the campground store and bought two bundles of firewood.

Bruce set up the campfire and after a bit, we had a nice campfire burning.

Fire Burning Down to Coals

As the fire burned down, I went inside to prepare the hotdog fixings while Bruce watched the fire.

I chopped up a small sweet onion, heated up chili, grated cheese and set out the dill pickle relish, mustard, and ketchup. I split my homemade hotdog buns and put them into the toaster,

Once the logs had burned down to coals, we roasted hotdogs on sticks over the coals.

Then, we toasted the hotdog buns and added the fixings and hotdogs to the buns. It was delicious!

After eating the hotdogs, we washed up and watched the coals for a bit. I brought out marshmallows. We happily put marshmallows on the end of the sticks and toasted marshmallows over the coals.

Bruce doused the fire with water after our marshmallow roast.

We don’t do this very often, so it is a lot of fun when we do.

  1. It is real camping when you have a wood fire and roast hotdogs and marshmallows! Sounds like a nice evening. In Arizona we are not allowed to have a real fire. We have a small propane fire pit, and a small propane gas grill. We had Beyond Brats the other day which were pretty good, but Wayne gave me a hard time for buying the commercial buns, not even the store bakery buns. They were half the price!

    1. It was a lovely evening. It depends where we are that determines what type of fire is allowed. Some places allow wood fires and others don’t. If we are in a spot that allows wood fires, we try to have a campfire and toast marshmallows. If we prepare a bit sooner, I’ll buy hotdogs and buns. Or I’ll make buns. This was the second time I’ve made buns. I like the homemade buns better, so I’m thinking they are the way to go.
