Dinner in the Evening and then Driving from Ellis, Kansas to Golden, Colorado the Next Day

June 4, 2023

On May 20 (Saturday), we were invited to dinner by a friend who lives in Hays, Kansas. We had a lovely time.

Much to my surprise, her oldest (7 years old) boy remembered me from the Halloween extravaganza FirstBank does. While I was dressed up as a witch, my friend let her two boys follow me back to my desk to get candy. It was good Halloween candy, so I guess it made an impression.

We arrived at their house on the motorcycle and their oldest boy was out riding his bicycle. He tried to play it cool, but we could tell he was impressed by the motorcycle.

Later that evening, he tried to convince his mother (my friend) to let Bruce take him for a ride on the motorcycle. After his mother told him no, Bruce kindly explained he didn’t have a helmet that would fit the boy and he (Bruce) would only take someone for a ride with a properly fitting helmet. The boy understood that and was okay with not getting a ride.

I brought my friend a gift of pottery from Louisiana and I gave her boys the crystals I dug in Oklahoma.

Her youngest boy didn’t remember me, but on hearing I had given him candy in the past, he made a drawing for me. It has been a long time since I’ve had refrigerator art.

After the wonderful meal, we headed back to the RV. Nox was happy to see us and to take a walk around the RV park.

The next morning, we got up, got packed up, and pulled out. We stopped at the Love’s Truck Stop on our way out of Ellis.

As we drove, we noticed people on bridges over the interstate waving flags. We wondered why they were doing this. A google search turned up nothing.

A short time later, we noticed hundreds of motorcycles heading east. We believe that was the reason for the flags. I don’t know why the motorcyclists were riding.

We stopped for fuel. The bridge we crossed over to get to the truck stop was lined with flags.

The city was taking the flags down when we were leaving. The motorcyclists had long ridden under this bridge.

When we got to Denver, all the work on I-70 was complete. CDOT had been working on I-70 when we left last year.

We made it to Dakota Ridge RV Resort. Bruce checked us in while I stayed in the truck with Nox.

The pull through site was uphill and we had problems. The truck rails bumped into the RV and the spare tire hit the concrete pad. Ugh!!!!

Bruce pulled forward and everything was resolved. There was no damage to the truck or RV. We would’ve done so much better to back into the site from the next road over. Live and learn.

Nox was happy to get a walk and get settled in.

  1. Around here, bikers are out by the thousands preceeding and following Memorial Day, so they may have been heading to some rally somewhere. And no helmet/no ride is absolutely the right message!
