***Updated on September 2 to remove watering. I watered later.***
On August 23, Bruce was excited to try the cucumber chips.

He had a hard time not eating all of them in one sitting.
I got a package from Amazon. It contained a shelf organizer for lids or plates and a Mason jar sealer.

The organizer takes up the same amount of space as the lids did when sprawled out. I can see which lid I need and don’t have to move several lids to get to the right lid. I really like it.
I got a Mason jar sealer to help with storage.

Bruce made daikon refrigerator pickles. He used a couple of my snap-lid storage containers. I moved the radishes to a couple of pint jars. Bruce used apple cider vinegar to pickle the radishes, which is why the vinegar is so dark. The pint jars saved a lot of space in the fridge and I got my snap-lid containers back.
These pictures show part of our evening walk,

Not just any food dehydrator…a RONCO dehydrator! I can almost here the voice of the famous founder Ron Popeil doing those TV ads. Trivia: he sold RONCO for $55 million n 2005 and the company went bankrupt in 2018. So here’s hoping you didn’t buy the extended warranty.

I had to say RONCO dehydrator. I knew several people would remember the TV ads. The box it came in has “As Seen on TV”. 😆

I remember those ads! How ironic…I made beef jerky for my Dad (he turned 96 today) and he loves it. I used my 1979 vintage dehydrator. Still works great and turned out a fantastic batch. Now if I just hadn’t gotten rid of my meat slicer, it would have been much easier to knock out a nice batch. But my gosh, who can afford meat these days? I’m a vegetarian and had no idea how expensive beef is and nearly had a coronary when I got to the checkout. Yikes!

My vintage dehydrator works great! I mostly use it to dehydrate basil and other herbs. I have been thinking of dehydrating cherry tomatoes and of course, more cucumber chips!

The part about the jar sealer is particularly interesting. If you were to post more about you family pickle process, I would be an avid reader. This time of year refrigerator real estate is at a premium. I’d be interested in ways you cope with that. One more thing: the work you invest in your blog is noticed. Cheers! PD

The jar sealer isn’t a replacement for actual canning. Items that need to go into the fridge are soups, chili, stews, fruits, vegetables pickled and fermented foods that you normally keep in the fridge. These items will last a longer because the vacuum reduces food spoilage. I wanted to be able see what was in containers, take up less of a footprint and even stack the jars. The pint mason jars do a great job. I don’t have room to stack quart jars, but the footprint is a lot smaller and saves space.
For dried foods from the garden, such as dried herbs, dehydrated foods such as cucumbers, dried beans, and other dried foods, the sealer will extend the shelf life of the dried foods.
Various sites suggest storing pantry staples such as lentils, oats, rice, etc in sealed mason jars to extend the shelf life and keep them fresher. The question then becomes, do you have enough mason jars.
One of the things I like about the mason jar sealer is the food isn’t in plastic.
I have found boxes of mason jars at estate sales.

Are the cucumber chips crispy like a potato chip? Interesting.

They are crispy like potato chips, without most of the fat!

Darn, I was hoping that mason jar sealer would be a way to avoid needing a water bath canner!

I like it so far. I’ll just have to see how I like it going forward. I am expecting to do water bath canning at some point, but not this year.

It will be grape jam season in a few days. The ol’ canner will get a workout once again! 😄
