Second Saturday Street Fair in Tuscumbia, AL

I wanted to do something fun after completing the tax form on Friday. Checking out the Second Saturday Fair in Tuscumbia, AL on April 11, seemed to fit the bill.

In Tuscumbia, AL, from April to August, every second Saturday of the month, they do a street fair.

From the Colbert County Tourism site: “Second Saturdays is a family friendly, outdoors market in downtown Tuscumbia, AL from April to August. Every Second Saturday from 12PM – 7PM, we’ll have artist, sellers, bakers, musicians and so much more set up in downtown Tuscumbia!”

The local paper claimed food trucks would be there and the fair started at 10 am.

With the perfect weather, we rode the motorcycle, arriving just before 11 am. We walked down one side of the street, looking at the vendor booths. We turned a corner, and a food truck appeared, Smashed. I had heard the burgers were amazing from several folks.

The Smashed truck wasn’t open when we walked up to it. While we were pursuing the menu, they opened. We each ordered a combo, a burger, fries, and a drink. The burgers were perfect smash burgers. The meat had crispy and lacy edges with a delicious beef taste. The toppings on the burger were perfect and the buns squishy. The Coke drinks were in one cooler outside the food truck and the bottled water was in another cooler.

We sat on street benches by the oldest commercial building in Alabama to enjoy our food.

In the food bag, I found a card with ads for the local business. One of local businesses was an art supplies store, Emily Cooper Studio and Art Supplies. I had to stop in to see what they had. In talking to the shop owner’s mother, I found out when JoAnne’s went bankrupt, there was a domino effect. A large art supplier and factory went bankrupt as well. It is hard to find art suppliers now. I was hoping to find Indian Ink and nibs. They didn’t carry any.

I have noticed in several local stores, the parents or in-laws, of the owner work in the stores to help out. It gives them a chance to do something and enjoy contact with friends and various customers. Bruce will talk their ears off.

At the end of the street, a section for children was set up. They had a bounce castle, child-sized cornhole, and other lawn games.

A band was setting up around 12:30 pm. They were good, as expected of any musicians in the Shoals area.

We walked along the other side of the street checking out the wares at the booths.

The vendors at the fair were mostly jewelry vendors with a few scattered candle and soap vendors. I also saw some clothing vendors.

After enjoying the fair, we meandered down to Spring Park and walked around the small lake. I have an earlier post that describes the Spring Park in detail.

We rode the motorcycle home.
