Digging Out Grass and Weeds in Small Flower Garden Bed

September 24, 2025

A while back, I laid down cardboard on the grass and covered it with Bama Dirt’s Pro Mix where I wanted flower beds. I planted cantaloupe seeds in the smaller bed, thinking the vines would look pretty.

While we were gone for two weeks, the weeds had a chance to thrive. The pictures below show the grass and weeds we came home to.

On September 16 (Tuesday), I decided to trim the purple magnolia branches. The low branches were in Bruce’s way when he mowed. I also wanted to get a start on getting the weeds in the flower gardens under control.

I brought my trusty wagon over, along with some implements of destruction. (Shovel, hand shovel, and clippers.)

I trimmed the low-hanging branches of the purple magnolia tree. This gives us a clear line of sight to the hummingbird feeders from the living room picture window.

I started digging up the grass and weeds, being careful not to disturb the cantaloupe vines.

Bruce came by and pulled up some of the edging. We are going to reuse the edging to separate the flower garden from the driveway.

He then went off to clear some of the blackberry brambles and other weeds that had grown up around Pine Number Two. He also mowed around the branch piles in preparation for more chipping.

I dug out grass and weeds and placed them in the wagon. I did this for a few hours and I was happy with having a weed-free bed. I was smart and did all this work while the area was shaded. I made some progress digging weeds from the larger bed, next to the walkway.

We had a pretty sunset in the evening.
