Cataract Surgery on Tuesday

July 13, 2025

I had a macular hole develop in my right eye about 15 to 20 years ago. The surgery to repair the hole requires the fluid to be drained from the eye. This can cause cataracts to develop faster than they normally would.

My right eye has developed a cataract that now needs surgery. I’ve been delaying for a while, but it has gotten noticeably worse.

My left eye is fine. I am strongly considering having the replacement lens corrected for close distance and not 20/20. I am going to have to wear glasses anyway and I would rather be able to take off my glasses and do close-up work.

Tomorrow, I will put drops in my eye to help prevent an infection. I should also get a call from the hospital with the time of my surgery on Tuesday.

My Right Eye

  1. My husband and I both had cataract surgery 2 summers ago. We were told it is one of the most common procedures, with a very high success rate. In both of our cases it did not go smoothly, although in the end it was successful. I have some comments about getting the close up vision lens. I got the distance vision lens, so my distance vision is perfect now, but I have to wear glasses for close up vision. Before the surgery I had 1 eye that was a lot worse than the other one, and one eye that had some close up vision, so it was something like mono vision (one eye for close up, one eye for distance) which I found annoying but at least I could read my phone without glasses if necessary. I wore general purpose progressive glasses, with another pair of progressive office glasses for sitting at the computer. Skip ahead to my new eyes, and although I can see distance perfectly, I cannot see at all up close. I cannot read my phone or the shampoo bottle in the shower. At first I was getting along with cheater glasses for close up. However for general purpose wearing the cheater glasses drives me crazy, as they only give you 1 close up distance. So now I wear progressive glasses with no prescription for the distance part, but varying prescriptions for different distances of closeup. And I do still use inexpensive cheaters for reading, and another pair of progressive office glasses. The conclusion here is that getting a close up distance lens will help with some things, but only for whatever 1 distance they use. Maybe that will be great for you, but I think if I had done that I would still be in the same boat as I am now. The good news is that the procedure did not involve any pain or discomfort.

  2. You will be so happy with the results. You’ll question why you waited so long to have it done. I had both eyes done a couple of years ago, and it made such a huge difference. I am so happy with my results. I’ll be thinking of you. 🙂
