Update on Bruce’s Dad, Grill Ready to Grill

May 18, 2025

Bruce’s dad managed to go home from the hospital yesterday (May 17, Saturday). I do mean managed. There was a lot of miscommunication happening at the hospital. The doctor (neurologist) didn’t know my FIL had been moved to a regular room!!!! Who authorized moving him out of ICU then? Several hours after being told he would be released shortly, my FIL was finally released. A nurse did her best to get the medical personnel to see him so he could leave. Neighbors kindly stayed with my FIL the whole time and then drove him home.

Bruce reached his dad in the evening and had a good conversation with him. Bruce is feeling better about his dad being on his own after talking to his dad.

In the morning, Bruce started mowing. When the batteries run out and are being recharged, Bruce takes a break. He sits and relaxes with a glass of water or coconut water.

Before Bruce headed out to mow after his break was done, I suggested we move the grill. Bruce thought that was a good idea.

We lifted the grill down from the truck to the garage floor. Bruce pushed the grill through the garage. When we got to the back of the garage, I helped lift the grill over the short step and then the threshold. Bruce was able to pull the grill over the grass to the patio.

I moved our portable grill out of the way. (I still haven’t packed it up.)

Bruce locked the grill wheels and was pleased to discover the grill didn’t want to move.

He went off to do some more mowing.

I spent a bit of time cleaning the grill. It wasn’t that dirty, but I wanted it to look new. I hadn’t realized it was brown until I started cleaning it. I had thought it was black. I cleaned the outside on all sides, even the back. The inside of the grill had some spider webs and a layer of smoke char on the lid. I cleared out the spider webs and started the burners. I also realize the smoke char will be back the first time I use the grill. I did a quick scrub on the grill grates. They didn’t seem to really need it, other than to clear off some spiderwebs.

Since we had the trellis frame up for the tomatoes, I went into the barn to find the string I had purchased to use for the tomatoes. I was looking in a cardboard box on the ground in the barn. As I moved my gardening items around, I noticed the bottom of the box had been eaten away. Termites were crawling on the bottom of the box.

We’ll have to get someone out to deal with them.

I did find the string.

I told Bruce about the termites and he wanted to see where they were. I showed him. He and I are in agreement. The termites must go!

After supper, we took a walk around the yard while waiting for the Thermacell to warm up enough to repel the mosquitoes.

Several birds serenaded us, while we enjoyed the cooler evening out in the rocking chairs on the front porch. We watched a bat preform an amazing acrobatic display while the fireflies flashed underneath.

We are seeing more fireflies flashing now. Who knows? Maybe I’ll be able to capture a flash with my phone camera.

  1. Hooray for the good news about your FIL! I hope the neighbors continue to help keep an eye on him.

It’s funny but I woke this morning wondering how your new grill worked. I must have been hungry in my sleep! 😆

How do you like the Thermacell? Does it work well?
