New Range Hood Installed

December 12, 2024

Bruce and I purchased a new ducted range hood at Lowe’s. We both wanted to have a hood that was ducted.

The hood that came with the house just recirculated air into my face since I am tall. I also managed to bump my head into the hood hard enough to hurt. I was always trying to make sure I didn’t hit my head into the hood. It stuck out so far that it was hard to get under it. The lighting was also poor.

The hood was too low for its intended use.

Original Hood

On Monday (December 9), I called the air conditioning and heating experts recommended by the roofers. The owner answered the phone and said he could send his boys out to check out the work we wanted done and then he could give me a price. I asked what time and was told 8 AM in the morning.

On Tuesday (December 10), I got a call at 7:30 AM saying they were on their way.

Once they got here, I showed them the new hood in its box. I also showed them the entrance to the attic in the garage.

They needed to take the new hood out of the box so they could get a better understanding of the parts they would need.

Once they figured out all the parts needed, they called their boss with the information. He gave them the amount ($800) to tell me.

Bruce and I agreed that $800 was reasonable and told them we’d like to proceed.

They went and got the parts and installed the new hood that morning. I put a towel down over the stovetop to protect it from any damage. I was glad I did since they put tools and other things on top of the towel.

I wish I had moved everything off the counters next to the stove. Sawdust got into more places than I expected.

Nox wanted to go outside; here she is checking out their van.

They had most of the hood installed by 11 AM. They went to lunch while waiting for some glue to dry enough for them to finish up on the roof.

Almost Done

They made it back just before noon and finished installing the ductwork. They verified everything worked and even offered to sweep up the sawdust.

They took the check Bruce wrote and headed back to the shop.

I cleaned the hood and wall behind the range to remove hand and finger prints. I cleaned up the sawdust from the counter tops. I removed the towel from the stovetop and discovered some sawdust had made it through the towel, which meant I needed to clean the stovetop.

Once everything was clean, I took pictures.

The new hood has a shorter depth and height. I am no longer am concerned about hitting my head. I can easily reach the back of the stovetop without getting underneath the hood.

I like the hood lights; there are two lights, one on the left side and one on the right side.

We did go outside to see what the new vent on the roof looked like.

    1. While Bruce said he could install the new hood, he was less than enthusiastic. He has a bad shoulder and reaching up tends to cause him pain. He was happy to pay someone to do the work.
