Heading a Short Distance East on I-70 to Abilene, Kansas

August 4, 2024

In Ellis, KS, we got up at 8:30 AM and got dressed. Nox was happy to go for a walk. After Nox’s needs were taken care of, Bruce and I walked to JR’s BrickHouse Diner and had breakfast.

If you’re ever in Ellis, Kansas, JR’s BrickHouse Diner is worth a stop. Bruce absolutely wanted to have breakfast there.

After breakfast, we walked back to the RV and started packing it up.

When we were setting up yesterday, Bruce made the mistake of attaching the water to the black tank flush, which filled the black tank to 90% full before I realized what had happened. Bruce had asked me to get water for Nox and when water didn’t come out of the faucet, I yelled, “did you connect the water to the black tank flush?” I heard some bad words as Bruce ran to the water connections. Yep, he had connected the hose to the black tank flush. I think this is the third time he has done this.

With our black tank mostly full, we needed to dump it before we left the Ellis Riverside Campground.

The dump station is very awkward. We had to pull all the way around the campground and come back into the main part of the campground. With a campsite at the end of the dump station, we couldn’t pull even with the sewer hookup, without sticking into the road.

Bruce didn’t want to hang out in the road. The sewer hookup was a covered hole in a manhole cover. It was the largest hole we’ve ever dealt with and the sewer hose kept wanting to jump out while draining.

At the Dump Station

Once the black tank was dumped and then the bath grey tank was dumped, Bruce washed up in the bathhouse. We both climbed into the truck cab.

Bruce pulled the RV through the RV park and out to the main street of Ellis, then we were heading down Interstate 70 by 11:30 AM.

Some of the reflections on the window meant the pictures didn’t turn out as well. Please excuse them.

We only moved 133 miles today. Tomorrow, we are taking the RV to New Horizons to have the suspension and brakes checked.

Unfortunately, the weather is going to be hot as blazes, with the high being 102 degrees F.

Since Nox has to be with us, we are limited in what we can do. Everywhere needs to be dog friendly.

  1. I do not often see Hays, Kansas in the news or in a blog, but it always brings a smile to my face. Reminds me of my boyfriend in high school who did the Kansas wheat run one summer and sending him letters to General Delivery. I have so many memories of watching my grandfather cut wheat.

    1. I could understand it happening once, but I’ve learned from his mistake! I suggested he put the cap over the black tank flush. Apparently, the cap isn’t very good and will come off while we are on the road. I think another cap would work. Bruce is thinking about putting in the pressure regulator so he would always know to connect to it. He could also just always read the label! 😆

  2. I remember those RV days of the mishaps! Oh boy! Hello, Nox! It’s good to see you all! My youngest son is moving to Oklahoma this week and my oldest will be leaving Abilene, TX back to Alaska in January. I must keep getting better as more trips in my future are needed! I sure miss my RV, but can’t do it alone anymore. Stay safe out there!

    1. It is good to hear from you. I hope you do continue to get better and are able to travel with problems. I am so glad we decided to RV while Bruce is in good health and I mostly have my health problems under control.
