RV Visitor from South Africa

July 4, 2024

One evening, Bruce and I were walking around Dakota Ridge RV Park in Golden, Colorado with Nox. As we walked back to our RV, we spotted this visitor from South Africa.

We didn’t notice the tag at first. We were impressed with how rugged this RV seemed to be. I originally thought the wire covering the windows was a bit excessive, joking that maybe they needed protection from bears.

Once I realized the RV was from South Africa, I decided the wire wasn’t excessive, since lions or leopards might decide to see if people taste good.

Bruce argued that South Africa was too far south to have lions and leopards, but I was sure it did based on watching a documentary years ago.

Google was Bruce’s friend, as he checked to see if South Africa has lions and leopards. It does!!! I was right! Bruce was pleased to learn something new, South Africa wasn’t as far south as he thought it was. Anything to do with maps makes him happy.

  1. Wow! It would have been interesting to talk with the camper. How in the heck did a camper from South Africa get to Colorado? Every once in a while, there is something very unique in the campground. We always enjoy taking walks around the campground.

  2. Julia, Talk about rugged!  And how about 2 spare tires?  It must have been an interesting trans-Atlantic trip. Did you get to meet the owners? Love, Howard

    1. Howard, we didn’t get to meet the owners. We had hoped we might get to meet the owners, but we didn’t see them outside and they left the next day.

  3. I did find a blog about a family from South Africa who are traveling the world in their Land Rover Outlander. I don’t know that it is the same one, but basically, they grew up in Apartheid South Africa in isolation and wanted to see the world and show their two children. They have traveled parts of Africa, South America, North America. They had a post about International borders, and since the ocean is between continents, I assume when they change continents, they ship the Land Rover to where they are going, and drive once they get there! Now, that would be a travel experience. They do wild camping.

    1. Sounds fascinating! It might even be the same family since I imagine there wouldn’t be that many who would do something like that. The RV looked very rugged and had spar tires and gas tanks. I was guessing they were heading into the Rockies to do some camping.
