December 17, 2023
Soon after we got the RV, we covered the outside steps with carpet. Nox had slipped on the steps in March of 2021 and we didn’t want to risk her falling again due to slippery steps. The steps were also slippery for Bruce and me as well.
The carpet has worn out and as we discovered, it came with some unfortunate problems.
- The carpet takes a long time to dry after a rain, which means no sitting on the steps. It also means we track in water after a rain.
- Putting up the steps after a rain during a move causes water to run off the wet carpet into the RV.
- The carpet collected dirt and sand. At one stop, when we raised the steps, sand ran like water from the carpet. We got a lot of sand into the RV. (This was even after I had vacuumed the steps.)
This October (2023), the wear and tear on the carpet was becoming obvious. The carpet developed holes and started having green stains (algae?) on it.

It was time for a new step cover: SeaDek RV Step Cover.
Bruce ordered the new step covers and put one on. He hasn’t had a chance to put the rest on, but this is what the new step covers look like. The top step has the old carpet on it. The next step down has the new cover on it. The next step down from the new cover is the original step without any cover.

The SeaDek RV Step Cover has some cushioning to it. Bruce also said it was easy to install. He did have to cut a little from the side, as our steps weren’t as wide as the cover. I got the impression the hardest part of the job was cleaning all the dirt from the step.
Nox doesn’t seem to have any issues with the new cover.
