Pulling Up and Down Poison Ivy

April 23, 2026

On Sunday (April 19), the outside temperature was in the 50s F when I got up. With all the rain we’ve had recently, I decided it was a good time to pull up poison ivy since the ground would be soft. I have to wear protective gear when dealing with poison ivy vines causing me to get hot. Cool weather helps a lot. The rain-softened ground makes it easier to pull up the poison ivy vines.

I spent just over four hours pulling poison ivy from the ground and pulling poison ivy down from trees before I was too exhausted to continue. Bruce was kind enough to roll the trash can down to me and open the lid. I threw in the big heavy construction bag full of poison ivy. This prevented any contamination of the garage can lid and handle.

After my shower using Tecnu to scrub in hopes of avoiding the itchy reaction, I got dressed and sat under the ceiling fan. I enjoyed the breeze. Do you ever think of who invented the ceiling fan?

In sitting under the cooling breeze of the ceiling fan, I looked it up. I found this information on Wikipedia. The first ceiling fan was invented in India around 500 BC. The ceiling fan made it to the USA in the 1860s and 1870s. These had a very neat way to run them. A stream of water turned a turbine that drove a system of belts to turn the fans. In the South, some of these systems are still in use. The electric ceiling fan was invented by Philip Diehl. While largely unknown, Philip Diehl was a contemporary inventor of Thomas Edison. His inventions included an electric incandescent lamp, the electric motor of the Singer sewing machine, and the electric motor of a ceiling fan.

While I was pulling up poison ivy and pulling it down, Bruce mulched the asparagus bed with pine chips.

Later in the day, I walked around Blackberry Homestead.

  1. 🎵 She comes on like a rose, but everybody knows…🎵 Remember that great old Coasters song? Sadly I do, Sadly because it was 1959 – ai yai yai. Good thing you took all the right precautions and follow ups because…here come the lyrics again…🎵Poison ivy, Lord, can make you itch…🎵

  2. Interesting post! I remember when I lived in the shotgun shack in Bon Secour, stayed there for a time. No AC but a window unit and it was right next to the Gulf. Here in Florida, hard to get away from AC but for a time we had window units and ceiling fans kept us cool.
