Good News and Harvesting Some of the Basil

November 10, 2025

On November 6 (Thursday), Bruce and I waited for news of his dad’s latest procedure. There was good news, there was no more debridement needed on the wound. After we got the news, we ran errands. It was surprising how much of the day that used.

The weather forecast for the past few days had been warning of a hard freeze on Sunday night at 27°F with gusty winds. The prediction for Monday was for a chilly day (barely making it above freezing), with a low of 25°F overnight. The weather is supposed to warm up by Wednesday.

We had been talking about getting our last piece of furniture out of storage for a while and with his father’s improvement, Bruce felt comfortable planning to go to Golden, CO to pick it up and close out the storage unit. That would be $350 monthly back in our pockets.

We had been keeping an eye on the weather in Golden, CO, and along the route home. This is where the DriveWeather app we used for RVing really came in handy. The weather was expected to be clear from Golden, CO to Muscle Shoals, AL for several days.

Bruce booked a flight to Denver, CO for Saturday, November 8. Afterwards, he booked a U-Haul truck and movers at both ends. U-Haul makes booking movers very easy. He booked a hotel near the storage unit.

On November 7 (Friday), the weather was beautiful, a lovely fall day, perfect for starting to harvest the garden in preparation for the hard freeze coming.

I had so much basil to harvest. Bruce I picked several plants of basil.

I made two quarts of pesto and put them in the freezer. Bruce filled the dehydrator with basil. The house smelled amazing.

While I was processing the basil, Bruce headed to the RV to disconnect the water hose and put it away. He also picked up tip money for the movers.

Bruce originally had planned to ride the light rail from DIA to Golden. He did more research and realized it wasn’t feasible if he wanted to make his scheduled U-Haul truck pick-up time. He set up an Uber ride for the first time to get a ride from the airport to the U-Haul store, so he could make the pick-up time.

Bruce packed for the trip. He was worried his flight might get canceled and kept checking his email to make sure it wasn’t canceled.

We went to bed and Nox decided to get up at 11:00 PM. I stayed up with her for a couple of hours until she decided to go back to sleep. Nox has times when she just doesn’t feel good and wants company. It took me a bit to get to sleep.

It was a busy couple of days!

    1. Yes, and it is nice not to have that storage unit nagging at us! I can hardly wait to get the hutch in place, my crystal and china in it, and the other items that go in it. It will be great to empty out several more boxes!

  1. Homemade pesto is delicious! I just read about planting mint to keep away rats. I feed some cats in the neighborhood, and I am pretty sure they look out for us but I read somewhere that Florida does have rats and the smell of catnip keep them away, along with mint. I have a few hanging mint plants. Haven’t seen any rats but I did see them years ago in NYC, not upstate. Sounds busy.
