The Festival That Wasn’t

October 9, 2025

On October 3 (Friday), we went to a local estate sale. I enjoyed looking around, but didn’t find anything I wanted. Bruce didn’t spot anything he wanted either.

I had noticed an ad in the local paper for an art festival in downtown Sheffield, AL called “Paint the Street”. The festival ad promised food vendors, artist booths, and sidewalk chalk art on Saturday, October 4.

So on Saturday (October 4), we played a bit with Nox and made sure she had plenty of food and water. We geared up and rode the motorcycle into downtown Sheffield. We parked, removed our gear, and started looking for the festival.

We walked all the way to the big aluminum rock and roller statue. No festival!!!

We walked back to the motorcycle. On the way, we discussed riding around to find the festival. I checked the website to make sure I had the right day, yep, October 4, downtown Sheffield. I noticed a few other people walking around with the paper, obviously looking for the festival. We geared up and rode around…no festival.

Bruce stopped at a gas station to use the bathroom. I used the time to call the number in the ad. A friendly gentleman told me they didn’t have enough interest in the festival and it had been rescheduled to October 18. I told Bruce when he came out. He laughed.

We decided to eat lunch out since we had planned to eat at the festival. We tried nearby Champy’s. It is a fried chicken restaurant. They serve fried chicken and sides, as well as fried catfish. The chicken was very crispy and crunchy and tasted good, but we found the crust to be too thick for our liking.

After lunch, we headed home. Nox was sleeping, but she woke up when we checked on her. She was so excited that we were home!

  1. Love the statue! Your experience reminds me of when I went to the state park pool near here. It was closed. When I called, I asked why the info wasn’t on the website. They said it was too hard to update the website, but that it was on social media. Oh brother. Well, at least you had lunch out.

    1. Wow was just what I thought. I believe they didn’t advertise the festival properly and in time to get interest. They have a community college and the University of North Alabama nearby. I am sure if they had advertised properly at the colleges, the art students would‘be been interested.
