A Walk Around Blackberry Homestead

June 28, 2025

On June 15 (Sunday), I told Bruce I needed to take it easy. I woke up with my knee aching. Fortunately, walking wasn’t a problem.

Bruce decided to mow the blackberry canes around pine tree number two. He wanted to get closer to the trunks to cut the tree branches off. Pine number two had two large trunks that broke off.

As he mowed the blackberry canes, Bruce saw eyes looking out at him. A little bird had a nest in the blackberry canes.

Bruce stopped mowing there. He wanted the bird to be able to nest safely. Bruce felt he could wait and mow around the tree trunk after the bird had finished raising her family.

Bruce told me about the bird and I wanted to see her. I walked back to back pasture to see the bird nest.

Later, Bruce and I walked over to the bird nest and got to see the eggs.

Bruce did spend some time with his pole saw on pine number two.

I stopped by the garden and admired this bumblebee on the red clover growing in the strawberry bed.

By the north fence, I noticed this blue dasher dragonfly. It posed while I took several pictures from different angles.

This spicebush swallowtail butterfly caught my eye.

Bruce wanted to see what the round thing was next to the ridge line on the roof. Bruce got the ladder out and climbed onto the roof.

While Bruce was on the roof, he checked the gutters. He is very unhappy with the front gutter. Bruce found it full of water at the end without a downspout. The gutter is not leveled correctly to drain properly. Bruce believes it is a mosquito breeding ground and I have to agree.

The round thing on the roof turned out to be a coil of nails for a nail gun. It had been a source of confusion and concern for a while. We had a good laugh over it.

I spent a bit of time lying down. Nox wanted to hang out with me.

Let me up, Mom.

I made supper and discovered all the tree branch moving was causing me to have back and shoulder pain when leaning over the counter. This is what I am doing PT for and I caused a flare up.

We did sit outside and watch the sunset and fireflies.
