Rain and More Rain

May 12, 2025

It rained so much on Saturday (May 10). We weren’t able to do anything outside because of the rain. Nox even had to go outside in the rain.

Bruce spent some time replacing the outside door knobs since he could do that without getting wet. He replaced the standard door knobs with levers. It will be easier to open the door when we are messy or carrying something.

I was finally able to finish our taxes and file them. I had been waiting on a form that I knew was coming late. I had filed for an extension. I am so glad to be done with them!

On Sunday (May 11), we were pretty lazy. It rained on and off, so there wasn’t much we could do outside.

We were able to walk around and see how the garden was growing during a break in the rain. It was surprising how much the false dandelion in the yard grew with all the rain.

We got a thunderstorm during the night and poor little Nox got scared. We had a lightning strike close enough for the thunder to shake the house. The power blipped. This was around 2:30 AM. I was up with Nox and Bruce woke up as well.

Today (Monday, May 12), I slept in this morning. Bruce got up and mowed the backyard. He came inside after I had gotten up. He got the batteries charged up for the mower and headed back outside to mow some more. He wanted to get as much of the yard mowed as he could before it rained again.

I happened to notice my three fans closed up on top of my dresser. The fans made me think of my Great-aunt Hazel. Great-aunt Hazel had a wall in her house decorated with her fan collection. One of my fans is from her collection. I decided to hang two of my fans up so I can admire them. Having them closed up means I don’t get a chance to look at them and enjoy them.

I might move the fan on the right side over a little bit. Over all, I am pleased with how it looks. I might find a place to hang my third fan.

I spent the day catching up on housework and doing laundry.

Nox wasn’t feeling well this morning and needed to be carried around for a bit. She felt fine later.

Bruce put the mower in the barn and avoided the rain that arrived at 1:45 PM.

It was a quick deluge and the sun was back out.

Bruce waited for a bit, then he was back out mowing the front yard.

He called it quits around 4:30 PM, just ahead of another rain storm. Bruce was closely watching the hourly weather report to avoid the rain.

For supper, I decided to make a hortopita with the leftover greens. I also picked some Japanese mustard greens, mints, thyme and green onion leaves to add to the hortopita. I didn’t have any more feta, so I used some goat cheeses and a sheep cheese. I have read that traditionally, hortopita doesn’t have cheese.

It was a nice supper. Afterwards we sat out on the front porch. We didn’t get a colorful sunset. We did see some fireflies, flashing their messages of love. The clouds cleared enough for us to see Jupiter, satellites and stars.

Then it was time for Nox to have her nightly walk and for us to go to bed.

    1. You are right, Bruce is mowing the yard a lot. The yard grows very fast when it rains. Bruce does mow the yard in sections. He may mow two sections in a day, then another section on another day. Then another section on another day. Five acres is a lot to mow!
Bruce wants to keep some sections of the yard short for Nox. Tall grass and weeds bother her. He’ll mow those sections more often.
