This morning, Nox went with me as I headed out to plant beets in the garden beds. I planted these beets: Detroit Golden, Detroit Dark Red and Chioggia. Chioggia is a “candy striped beet.” It has red and white alternating rings with a bright red skin.
I noticed the field pansies are blooming in the yard.

After deciding I didn’t want to be out in the wind, I sat with Bruce and Nox in the living room, drinking a cup of hot herbal tea. Bruce and I watched birds on the bird feeders from the big picture window, while Nox first lay on the floor then went to sleep in my lap.
It was exciting to see a cardinal along with house finches and pine warblers. The occasional dark-eyed junco and sparrows were also at the feeders.

As I write this on my phone, Nox is sleeping on my lap, snoring away.

The wind has died down, so once Nox wakes up, I am going back outside to garden!
I saw my first red-bellied woodpecker in the feeder this morning!

I love seeing woodpeckers. I haven’t seen our flickers in a while.

Aw, I want a sleeping Nox for cold winter days too!
I haven’t had much luck with beets other than Detroit Red. The others had disappointing flavors.

Detroit Red is the “gold” or is it the “red” standard of beets. I also like the flavors of other beets as well.

I had one kind of beet grow as a tube, not a globe, and they were a khaki color. Those were unpleasant beets. 🤢

That doesn’t sound attractive at all!
