With my raised garden beds full of dirt and a beautiful day, I headed out to start planting cool season seeds.
I’ve given the raised bed rows letters (A and D, as B and C don’t have beds yet.) and I numbered the beds from north to south. Row A is the short beds closest to the house. So bed A1 is in the row closest to the house and on the north side of the garden. Row D is the tall beds.
I started planting the tall beds today (Row D).
In D1, I planted mixed leaf lettuce, sorrel, and radishes. In D2, I started planting beets.
While I was planting beets, the wind really picked up. With the packet of beet seeds in hand, I was pouring the seeds in my hand back into the packet, when a strong gust of wind carried the seed packet and seeds off! The gust also lifted up the cardboard boxes covering the cow manure compost and blew them around in the yard.
I could see the trees in the woods bowing in the wind. I heard branches cracking as the trees returned upright.
I picked up Nox and headed quickly inside. Nox had been enjoying the wind. She kept standing, sitting or lying so her nose was facing the wind.
I told Bruce about the seed packet flying out of my hand.
When the wind gusts calmed down, Bruce and I went outside to see if we could spot the seed packet. We didn’t have any luck finding it. We did cover the cow manure compost with the cardboard and put large rocks on the cardboard in hopes of preventing it from flying away again.
It started raining around 4 o’clock. I could hear the rain pounding against the roof and wall.
It was nice to get the rain to water in the seeds. I had hoped to plant some more seeds today.
Varieties planted:
- Mixed Leaf Lettuce (Random mix of lettuce)
- Broadleaf Sorrel
- Plum Purple Radish
- Gourmet Golden Beet

In other news:
Bruce went to get his star id driver’s license today. He was successful! Only one of the documents he bought in yesterday was expired. The utility bill has to be within 90 days. The other document was fine and if they had suggested that he get his vehicle registration, he could’ve been yesterday.
Bruce also spent some time on the phone finding a primary care doctor as he needs his blood pressure meds prescription renewed. I’ll see how Bruce likes the primary care doctor and I may use them as my primary care doctor. I need to find an ophthalmologist since I’ve got eye issues.
While items on the list get completed, more just get added!
Ha! You are going to find wild beets growing in your yard from that escaped seed packet! 😆
Seriously, though, I hope you find good doctors to help you with your medical issues. Blood pressure and eyes need to be taken care of. Hope to hear good news in future posts about the great providers you’ve found. 😊

I wonder if you will have beets growing across the yard! It took me many years to realize that my to-do list is never going to be complete. No matter how many tasks are completed, more are added.

I also am curious if the beet seeds will sprout in the yard.
Yes, more and more things just keep being added.
