A Scene Straight from Colorado in my Alabama Backyard

January 10, 2024

Last night, I woke up at 4:30 AM to go to the bathroom. I looked out the window to see if it had snowed since the winter storm warning started at midnight.

Snow was coming down in large flakes and it looked like a half inch to an inch of accumulation of snow.

Around 7:30 AM, Nox decided she needed her people and started whining. Bruce got up and got dressed. He went to see Nox. After confirming Nox was fine, other than missing attention, Bruce walked out to the grass with a measure to see how much accumulation we had gotten. It was still snowing some then.

At 10:00 AM, it was very lightly snowing.

Bruce Measured 3 1/2 to 4 Inches of Snow

I took some pictures from inside the house.

While looking out the picture window, we saw a county vehicle stopped in the road. A four-wheeler had stopped behind the truck.

After breakfast, we headed outdoors with Nox. I wondered if she remembered snow from Colorado. From the way she acted, I would say she remembered snow.

We walked down to the end of the driveway to see the road. As we walked down to the road, the snow turned to sleet. I could hear the sleet hitting the hood of my jacket.

While we were walking back to the house, a jeep slid off the road into the ditch right across from the house. They were spinning their wheels and appeared to be stuck. We looked at each other and Bruce said, “What can we do to help?”

I replied, “Do we have any lumber we could put down for them?”

We headed up to the house to see if we had anything to help, when we saw the jeep had put it in reverse and was backing down the ditch. They backed up to a spot they could back onto the road. Once they backed onto the road, they continued on their way, a bit slower.

By 11:27 AM, the snow had melted to 3 inches of snow. It has stopped sleeting and snowing for the time being.

11:27 AM Snow Measurement, 3 Inches

We’ve been sitting in our rocking chairs, watching all the four-wheelers go by. We’ve also seen a number of trucks go past with the occasional car.

The first four-wheelers we saw all had roofs. Now, I am seeing a lot of roofless four-wheelers.

Right now, some of the snow is starting to fall in a flurry from the trees.

The current temperature is 35 degrees F. More snow is predicted until 4:00 PM. It is nice to be inside and not needing to take care of animals in this weather.

    1. I miss the warm days of December, January and February in Florida. I keep getting on this day pictures and on this day last year, we were enjoying Florida!
