Rain and More Rain

The weather has turned rainy. Earlier in the week, Thursday was predicted to partly cloudy with Friday being rainy. By Christmas (Wednesday), rain was in the forecast for Thursday as well. On Thursday, it rained on and off.

Since it was raining on Thursday, we decided to do some shopping at Rural King. Rural King had a big sale before Christmas. All the clothes had been picked through and there wasn’t much left. Nothing fit Bruce. The price of boots caused sticker shock for him, so he didn’t even try them.

We did buy two rocking chairs for the front porch. We also bought chicken wire to line the bottom of our raised beds.

On the way home, we stopped at Rick’s Farm Market. I purchased some Arkansas Black Apples to send to my sister who loves them.

With it raining on Friday, we made the trip to Costco in Madison, Alabama (near Huntsville, Alabama) which is an hour and a half or so away.

Bruce brought his glasses prescription and with help, we ordered a couple of pairs of glasses for him. We purchased a folding table to eat at, a wagon for me, and an upright freezer. We also bought some groceries and Kirkland box wine.

Last night, I made a trip out to the barn to find a good box for shipping apples. I found two candidates. I chose the sturdier box and packed the apples to send to my sister.

We plan to go to the post office and send the apples to her. I do hope they make it safely and they are as good as she remembered.

It feels like we are being lazy since we aren’t out working in the yard.

Nox has been snuggled to her Riverstone blanket in her bed. She doesn’t really like rain.

  1. My first thought was, “Oooh, you get to ride in the wagon?!?” but then I though not. Second thought: I’m not a huge fan of rain either (and we are about to get several days here in northern Vermont, but it should pause in time for the New Year’s bonfire), but we need enough to keep drinking water and plants growing and rivers for fish.

    1. It will be Nox riding in the wagon while I pull it around. She loves to ride.

      We do need rain and it can serve as an excuse to have a lazy day. I enjoy baking bread on a rainy day. The house smells lovely and I enjoy fresh bread.

      2. It gives me a lot of time to read while the bread rises. I can be relaxing and still sound productive. It does get busy at various points.

    1. That’s too bad! I hope your power wasn’t out for too long.

      We discovered we have a piece of tin loose on a shed. When the wind was blowing, the loose piece would come up the bang loudly when it came down. We also had some more branches come down.

      1. Several hours, but it finally came back on. I felt for the workers, it was raining all night and they were dealing with it during some of it. It was mostly in the area south of town where we are…of course! Sounds like someone is going to have to put some screws in that loose tin! At least I don’t have that to deal with–just falling limbs, falling fences, and kudzu! Take care and hope your weather doesn’t cause trouble for you.

      2. The linemen are the unsung heroes of our world. I admire their commitment and dedication to making sure we have power when the lines go down.

        Your list sounds like ours, except for the kudzu. We have poison ivy instead. I am not going to count honeysuckle vines as weeds just yet.

      4. Oh, yes we also have wild grapevines as well as some planted grapes allowed to go wild.
        Fire ants mounds are all over the property. Nox seems to be very curious about them and we have to save her from the fire ants by catching her before she gets into them. If she was younger, we wouldn’t worry so much about her meeting fire ants. Since she is so old, we are afraid about how badly they would upset her system.

      5. Definitely cautious with fire ants; we have them too. I put wire or concrete barricades around them with rocks on top of them when they show up in the fenced back yard, otherwise, our dogs cannot get to them as they are not out anywhere else except on a leash. I usually pour boiling water mixed with Dawn and essential oils on them, even though they just move somewhere else. As long as they are not in the fenced back yard, I just try to deal with it.
