Besides a new roof for Christmas, we also bought twelve metal garden beds. The first six arrived last week and the rest arrived yesterday, just in time for Christmas.
We finished putting together the short beds (17’) beds yesterday. Thanks to a reminder from Leslie from https://www.lbowmanstudios.com/ and https://theadventuresofbiteydog.com/ about her experience with rabbits in a raised garden, we are going to put chicken wire at the bottom of the beds.
Here’s pictures of our assembled six short beds, finished as the sunset touches the horizon with pink.

I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Nox also wishes everyone safe holidays!

A good nap is the best Christmas activity, isn’t’ it Nox? 😊
What will you use to cover your raised beds? I am looking for different options for this year.

Nox knows the best things to do!
I haven’t gotten that far yet. We’re still trying to find good topsoil to fill them. The tall beds are going to have old logs at the bottom to reduce the amount of dirt needed. This is a German technique with an incredibly long name.

Ooh neat! I hadn’t thought about logs. I have rocks at the base of my bed. Plus the wood will eventually become fertilizer!

Yes! Let me see if I can find a good post on using logs.

Bruce was watching a YouTube from Self Sufficient Me about Mark using logs as fill. Mark did it because he was trying to save money on dirt and provide additional organic matter to his garden beds. A follower thought it was cool that Mark was using Hugelkultur. Mark showed what the logs looked like after 7 years. They had rotted a lot. He showed how the wood soaked up water. Mark adds organic matter (compost) to his garden beds all the time.

Doesn’t it seem a bit wild to be gardening mid-winter? The south is so different than Colorado!

It does! At this time of year in Colorado, I’d be sitting by the fireplace either watching the snow fall while reading or just reading because it was cold 🥶 outside!
