Signed a Contract for a New Roof

I have been getting quotes from different roofers in the area to see how much it would cost to replace the roof. Bruce wanted to know how much it would cost to get a standing seam roof.

One of the companies came out and offered a 50 year Corning roof. They offer the platinum warranty from Corning.

He walked me through the whole system that they used to put the roof on.

The Corning platinum warranty is an excellent warranty backed by Corning.

The shingles are made with ceramic bits instead of crushed limestone rocks. The shingles are also embedded with copper to prevent mold and algae from growing on the roof. The shingles also can withstand an inch and a half size hail that is golf ball size hail, Having experienced the nightmare of golf ball sized hail in Golden and then again in Kansas, this was a huge selling point to me.

I was on the Corning website, looking to get more information, when I noticed the first roofer I had talked to was a preferred contractor with with Corning. I realized that she had only given me a quote to replace the roof as it is, with the architectural shingles. The 30 year roofs only last for 15 years, so I had been planning using a different roofer.

But seeing that they are a Preferred contractor with Corning, I felt I should talk to them again. After all, I didn’t know about the Corning 50 year shingles when I first got in touch with them.

I called and asked if they did the 50 year Corning shingles and she asked did I mean the Duration shingles? I wasn’t sure, so I looked at the Corning site to find the shingle name. It was the Duration shingles. She was happy to give me a quote that included the preferred warranty from Corning. It was $10,000 less than the quote from the third contractor.

The preferred warranty is not as good as the platinum warranty.

The platinum warranty guarantees the workmanship on the installation of the roof for the lifetime of the roof, with reduced coverage after 25 years. The preferred warranty guarantees the workmanship of the roof for 10 years. That’s the only difference.

The first contractor does charge for replacing decking, the third contractor includes four pieces of decking in the price. Still, even if we have to replace four pieces of decking, it is still way cheaper.

The first contractor gets stellar reviews and they won the best roofer in the Shoals area for the last ten years.

The standing seam roof wasn’t nearly as expensive as I thought it was going to be. The roofer has a deal with a metal company in Cullman, Alabama. He focuses on metal roofs, so he is able to get a discount from the metal company.

Bruce and I talked through the roofing contractors, the pros and cons. We decided to go with the first contractor. I called them on Thursday to let them know I wanted the Duration roof. We made an appointment for Friday morning.

She came out on Friday, I signed the contract and handed over a check for the supplies.

If the weather holds out, we will be able to get our new roof the week after Thanksgiving.

It only takes them a day to tear off the old roof and put the new roof on. They have several team who specialize in areas of the roof.
