Rain, Rain, We Needed It

November 10, 2024

It has been a rather rainy day with breaks in the weather now and then.

During one of the beaks, I spotted a bluebird on the pump house. I was able to get pictures from the kitchen window, but he flew away when I moved into the dining room. I had hoped to get a picture through the sliding glass door.

The colors were brighter than the photo shows.

Yesterday, I finished up my map of Blackberry Homestead.

This is page three of the map.

Back Pasture

The last few feet didn’t fit on page three, but it is so close, I am not going to worry about it.

I did some more closet organizing. Can you spot the poison ivy bin?

I decided to start design work on the additional kitchen cabinets and shelves I want. I am starting by drawing it out first. I have so much cardboard (which I plan to use for gardens) that I can cut it up and create a rough idea of what it will look like.

Thoughts and Ideas Jotted Down

I drew the window wall.

I left the existing outlet and light switch (very odd spot for the backyard light switch) in place in my drawing. I would like the light switch moved to be next to the sliding glass door.

I want lots of bookshelf space for my cookbooks. I stored them all and want to have easy access to them.

I have two thoughts about the bookcase.

  • It could be 18 inches tall with a cushion on top to allow for extra seating.
  • It could be 24 inches tall to allow for extra room for tall books and more cookbooks. There would be no extra seating, but I could use the top as a display.

While I drew the bookcase with two sections, it might be more practical to have three sections.

Having the microwave at elbow height means it will be easy to see into it and take things out. I originally thought lower cabinets with a counter and upper cabinets. I might draw that out, as it will be a little open. I not sure how much more open it will be with the microwave taking up the countertop.

I also want to go with standard cabinet sizes, if possible. I don’t believe the cabinets are standard in my drawing. I’ll have to look up standard widths for cabinets. The depths should be correct.

I did briefly think of repurposing an antique kitchen pantry (Hoosier cabinet). One of the estate sales had one. While it was beautiful, I just didn’t see it working out.

Here’s some pictures of the rain.

In the picture above, Raindrops Falling, the white streaks are raindrops. You can see them more easily against the dark grey of the patio.

  1. I like to do scale drawings too when working on improvements. We have a window seat in our kitchen with storage underneath, with a table in front of it. So someone can sit on the window seat and be sitting at the table. It is a favorite place for my kids and nieces and nephews to congregate. And also just a comment…I knew at least 2 people with kitchen remodels in recent years where the microwave is way down low near the floor. WHAT? Not designed for seniors!

    1. I know it is common to see microwaves tucked into a niche down low when the family has children. That is not for me!

I really don’t like the microwaves that are above the stove either. You have to reach up to high and that can lead to spills. Been there, done that!
