So, today I got a text from GEICO today telling me that I needed to contact them.

I called them right away. They put me on hold and said it would be 30 minutes and did I want them to call me back? I felt a call back was okay and agreed to it by pressing 1.

A GEICO agent called me back in about 20 minutes.

To my shock, she was calling to let me know that GEICO would not be renewing our auto policy on September 1. The auto policy covers our truck and RV.

Why? When we filed the hail damage claim, someone at GEICO changed our address to Texas, which is our mailing address for our mail service. We have our mail sent to Texas to be scanned so we can see it online. Someone at GEICO decided to change our physical address to Texas.

Our physical address is Florida and we are Florida citizens. I called them and told them we didn’t live in Texas, we are full-time RVers and we had our domicile in Florida. We didn’t give them permission to change our address. The agent was very professional and changed the address back to Florida. I thought we were set.

I want to be clear. When we went full-time, we told GEICO that we were full-time RVers. The RV policy is set to be full-time, so they absolutely know we are full-time RVers.

We received a letter from GEICO at the end of June saying we need to prove we are Florida residents.

“To ensure we have accurate information and rating of your policy, please provide proof of residency for yourself.

The proof af residence must be dated within the last 30 days from today’s date and clearly show accountholder’s name, service address, provider name, and service date(s).


Acceptable proof of residency would consist of two (2) of the following items

  • Three (3) months of complete bank or credit card statements, showing multiple transactions
  • Tax Statement (must be filed within the last 30 days)
  • Full utility bill including usage and service address (land line telephone or intemet electric, gas, cable, water)
  • Mortgage documents
  • Verification of commute to work, such as train/bus tickets, monthly passes, or EZ Pass Statement
  • College Students: Paid tuition bill showing dormitory privileges, class schedule and parking permit for campus

You may retum the information by emailing it ot R2PIU@geico.com, uploading it to your GEICO policy, or mailing it in the enclosed envelope. When sending multiple documents please attach in one email and include the policy number in the subject line…”

I called GEICO and told them we didn’t have any of that. We are full-time RVers. The agent said she would let the department that was asking know.

I didn’t think anything about it until I received the call today.

The underwriting department didn’t like the fact that we changed our address from Florida to Texas and then back to Florida and couldn’t provide proof they asked for. The underwriting department decided not to renew our policy because of something that GIECO did.

I checked today and realized we had received a letter from GIECO on the August 8. I had requested it scanned on August 19. Most of the mail we receive isn’t urgent, but this letter was letting us know our insurance wouldn’t be renewed because we couldn’t provide any of the requested documents. I am glad they asked me to call them since I hadn’t seen the letter.

We have to find a new insurance company!!!

I am furious!!!! Absolutely furious! We have been good customers of GEICO for years. They’ve always been a good company to deal with in the past. They’ve just made my list of companies to never ever deal with again!

  1. Oh my gosh, I am positively livid! I would say that I can’t believe this happened, but I’m really not surprised. I hope that you are quickly and easily able to find a new insurer that does a better job taking care of their customers.

    In the meantime, spread this story far and wide. Maybe embarrassment will shame GEICO into better behavior.

  2. After our last insurance company fiasco, I asked a colleague and she gave me the name of a local independent agent they recommended. The company has been awesome, fair, reasonable and helpful. I can call and talk to my agent any time I have a question about coverage. They know our circumstances and we have been happy with them, and they with us. Reminds me of the days when you also knew your banker personally…

    1. A good agent would be so helpful right now. I just hope they do pay for the RV damage. It is going to cost a bit more than they originally estimated. If not, we will report them to the Florida Insurance Regulatory agency and the BBB.

  5. My insurance agents have changed many times through the years. The company, though, has been a rock! They have kept us as a client through 4 teen drivers, accidents and fender-benders. Countless windshields have been replaced. They also carry our house policy and have replaced our roof and windows twice due to hailstorms. They have been great and never tried to drop us. I’m sorry to hear that your experience was not as good. Is that typical for full-time RVers? Is there a specialty insurance company that covers your category? We are recreational RVers right now, but if we go full-time, is that something we need to consider?

    1. There are some specialty insurance companies for full-time RVers. We had never had any problems with GEICO before and we had them for about 30 years, through hail damage to the house, a few car accidents, etc. Never an issue, so I do think it is something you should consider if you go fulltime. Part of our problem is we have our mail sent to Texas to be processed and all our bills and bank statements have the Texas address.

      So, if you can keep your domicile state the same as your mailing address, then you shouldn’t have any problems.

      If we were domiciled in Texas, this wouldn’t have been an issue. Our mailing address and physical address would be the same. There were some other reasons we didn’t choose Texas as our domicile state. With an RV as large as ours, we would have to get a special driver’s license. We would need to come back to the state to get emissions tested or get a delay approval.

      2. Glad I could help. Because of the Patriot Act Passed after 9/11, banks, brokers, and insurance companies need to have a physical address. These businesses don’t normally have any problems with your mailing address being different than your physical address. In Colorado, in the mountain towns, if you don’t live in town, you have a PO Box to get your mail and physical address that the USPS won’t deliver to.
