Colorado School of Mines Museum of Earth Science – They Came from Outer Space

July 24, 2024

We did make it back to the Colorado School of Mines Museum of Earth Science on July 16.

This time we parked in the parking lot beside and behind the museum building. For all day parking, if you park there before 2:00 PM, it is $10 and after 2:00 PM, it is $5. On the weekend, parking is free.

We did arrive before 2:00 PM and had to pay $10. At least the museum entrance is free.

We headed downstairs to see the fossils and minerals we didn’t get a chance to see in our previous visit.

We checked out the minerals from various places.

We entered a ā€œmineā€ exhibit. The fluorescent minerals were beautifully displayed. First under normal light the minerals looked plain, then under ultraviolet light they glowed strange and beautiful colors.

They had an interesting exhibit set up for fracking.

I also enjoyed the exhibit about radon gas.

Dun, dun, duuuun! They came from outer space!

These two rocks came from the moon!

The exhibit for rare earth minerals was interesting and informative, but the glare on the glass was so bad I couldn’t get any good pictures.

I enjoyed the fossil section very much.

We looked at the center exhibits.

We went upstairs so Bruce could look at the minerals and labels with using his computer glasses.

I was able to get some good pictures of fossilized coral.

There is so much to see and the minerals are so beautiful.

While the section of fossils is small, it is well done and I enjoyed seeing them.

They had a lot more meteorites than I am showing in this post. They have a map of Colorado with meteorites on it with details of when and who found the meteorites. The glass reflection meant I didn’t get a good picture to share.

    1. The Colorado School of Mines is one of the top engineering universities in the U.S. They are the #1 ranked mineral and mining university in the world. The university is 150 years old and has some beautiful old buildings.
