Current News, A Couple of Falls

April 26, 2024

I have had a couple of falls in the last few days.

The first fall was on Monday (April 22). I was getting off of the motorcycle when I slipped. I was fully geared up and I fell on my butt and hands. If I hadn’t been wearing gloves, my hands would’ve been scraped up. My hands were a little sore, but nothing too bad. My butt didn’t even hurt.

Bruce didn’t even notice me fall, as he was focused on backing up the motorcycle. He did see me on the ground and thought I had sat down on purpose to get my gear off. Sometimes, getting my over pants off can be hard and I’ll sit down.

My fall yesterday (April 25) was pretty bad. In a way, it was rather stupid. The dryer vent outside was getting clogged with lent.

I decided to clear it. I took one of the camp chairs around and stood on it. The chair was fine; it didn’t wobble. As I reached up to clear the lent out I felt very dizzy and next thing I knew I was falling.

I hit the ground with my upper butt, lower back and my hands. The back of my upper right arm hit the wooden pole that holds the site number.

I sat there trying to catch my breath and the campers next door came running over to see if I needed help. I was embarrassed and trying to reassure them I was okay. I don’t think I looked good.

Bruce heard them talking and came around the RV to see what was happening. He asked if I was alright. The other RVers started talking to Bruce about seeing me fall. One gentleman mentioned how pale I was.

Bruce said let me get her some water. He ran inside and brought cold water and a cold washcloth. I sat for a bit longer, slowly drinking the water and putting the wash cloth on the back of my neck. The other RVers left once they were sure I was being taken care of.

Bruce helped me stand up and I limped inside to lie down.

Bruce kindly helped by putting medicine on my bruises. He was very upset about me being hurt and how bad the bruises look.

I am so lucky I didn’t hit my head on that post.

This is part and parcel of my ongoing health issues. Sometimes my balance just isn’t good. I really do need to think about how I feel before trying to do something like standing on a chair or ladder. I had been feeling a bit off before but I just tried to push through it.

One Big Bruise

  1. Oh, wow, I can empathize with that bruise! I am glad you were not seriously injured, and I am glad you won’t stand on a chair anymore! I finally got a Gorilla three-step ladder because I did not feel secure standing on chairs anymore (which I have done all my life and never fallen). It really helps, plus has a hand ledge across the top so I can lay down a tool or nails, etc. I highly recommend it, and it folds up nicely and takes up very little room.

    1. We even have a folding 3 step ladder that we use to get into the bed of the truck. I was thinking, “this will be quick.” I was so wrong.

      1. At least you already have the tool you need! 😁. Randy is always ragging on me for “not using the right tool for the job.” Like when I can’t find the screwdriver and use a butter knife–my grandma taught me that.

  2. I’m so glad you’re OK! I have balance issues as well, and I’m not quite sure how to deal with them. Sometimes you don’t know they’re coming till they’re there. I plan to learn from your examples!

  3. Perhaps at our age, pushing through isn’t always wise. It worked great in our 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s, but eventually, it just means we are ignoring our inner wisdom. That bruise looks awful! I’m glad you didn’t break anything.

  4. I have officially declared April as National Fall Awareness Month. I fell first at the grocery store checkout of all places. My husband fell walking outside. Then I was at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and witnessed a lady fall into the water, and another lady being tended by paramedics holding a cloth to her head. Now you fell. All in April!
