Columbia, South Carolina Riverwalk

Bruce asked me if there was anything else I wanted to do while we were in the area since we had to extend our stay.

I wanted to see the Columbia Riverwalk.

We rode down to the Riverwalk and parked in a very large lot next to the Columbia Water Plant.

The parking lot center had a memorial to victims of crimes.

Just past the statue was the entrance to the Columbia Riverfront Park and Historic Columbia Canal. There was also this red building. It looks like a one room schoolhouse to me. There wasn’t any signs about what the building was.

We noticed a sculpture on a side trail and past the sculpture was an outdoor fitness center. The side trail deadened, but we could see the canal from it.

We walked back to the main trail and headed towards the bridge. We saw a small ranger station and restrooms next to the bridge.

We crossed the bridge and discovered the remains of a pump house and hydroelectric plant.

The trail was between the Congaree River, Broad River and the Columbia Canal. The Saluda River joins to the Broad River near the park and becomes the Congaree River.

I was surprised to see Spanish moss dripping from the trees near the river and canal. I didn’t see it anywhere else.

Benches were spaced along the canal and river. One section near the river had hammocks support and we noticed one in use.

We turned around and walked back just past the mile marker. We geared up and headed back to the RV, with a stop at the bank for some cash.

Everyone wants cash these days, sigh, so much for the cashless society that was discussed.
