Healing Trail in Winchester, VA

October 6, 2023

In the early afternoon, we decided to do one more hike before we left Candy Hill Campground.

In looks at the map, the Shawnee Springs Preserve seemed like a good choice.

We geared up and rode the motorcycle to a parking area nearby. We parked, shed our gear and started looking around.

This was a reclaimed area, with new amphitheater seating. Workers were working on one end of the bridge as we watched.

We crossed underneath the bridge and followed the trail to the staring trailhead. It wasn’t very far.

We walked back, crossed a bridge and continued on the trail through a covered area. Someone must’ve been worried about falling debris from the train tracks.

We walked until we came to the Healing Trail. Noice how there is a line as the dark gray gravel changes to polished glass chips.

I stopped and picked up a handful of the glass chips to look at them. While the chips may look like they could cut, they are all smooth. The glass made a crunching noise beneath our feet as we walked along this path. The glass was at least an inch deep on this trail.

We saw the remains of the old water works. The trail came out of the woods into an open area.

We looped back to the motorcycle on the Shawnee Springs trail.

It was a beautiful area and a delightful hike. I had never seen glass used this way before. I wish my camera could have captured the true beauty of the glittering pathway.

After the hike, we headed back home and started getting ready to to leave Candy Hill Campground.

    1. The glass was really beautiful. It was different colors and it sparkled in the sunlight. If I am a trifle fanciful, I would say the path felt like a glittering pathway into a fairytale.

  1. That is one of the reasons I get so annoyed at the lack of glass recycling. There are so many things glass can be used for such as this trail, counter tops, floors, and of course, melting it and making new glass items. The trail is very pretty, and the bridges in the area are nice. When you say the area was reclaimed, what was its use before? This was indeed a good repurpose!

    1. Oh, I absolutely loved the use of glass on this trail. It was so beautiful. I have become a full convert of using recycled glass after enjoying this trail.
