On July 6 (last Thursday), we decided to have a campfire and use the campfire to light lump charcoal to cook a meal.
Bruce lit the fire using his flint fire starting kit. He has fire starter cotton balls, a flint rod, and pocket knife in a waterproof bag.

Here is Bruce starting the fire.

Once the fire was burning well, I laid a piece a foil down in the grate section of the fire pit to protect the fire from the damp ground.

Bruce moved the fire to the grill section of the fire pit. Once the fire was burned down a bit, I added the lump charcoal to the grated section. I also cleaned the the grate.
When the charcoal turned to coals, I placed the foil wrapped potatoes on the coals. After the potatoes had cooked for about 45 minutes or so, we put the steak on the grill grate. I used tongs to turn the potatoes every so often.

The steak picked up some smoke flavor, which made for a delicious steak. We had a salad with the steak and potatoes. It made a really nice meal.
Why did you not just cook over wood?

Fire starter cotton balls…I need to look for those. I bought a flint rod after having seen a youtube video (they made it look easy), but have yet to be able to start a fire using my flint stick! I’ve tried everything from itty bitty scraps of paper to dried grass but the flints never took to either of them.

Bruce is able to start a fire with one or two swipes along the flint rod. He makes an impressive amounts of sparks. It takes me a lot more tries to get a fire started with the flint rod.

I meant the sparks never took.
