On Sunday (June 25), we decided to walk to the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park along the Hennepin Canal State Trail.
The trail runs right behind the campground.

We headed to the left (east) and found the trail to be level and easy to walk along.

We saw many birds. Two bright orange orioles flashed past us, but I was unable to get their picture. We also heard the rose-breasted grosbeak, but didn’t see it this walk. This red wing black bird was bold and posed for me.

We kept looking for turtles, but we didn’t see any. There was a section of the canal with water lilies.

As we walked along, we could see the corn fields to the left.

We could see I-80 up ahead and realized we were going to walk underneath it.

Once we were past I-80, we were in the Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park. A iron bridge came into view and the trail crossed the canal.

We walked around one section of the state park. It is in sad shape. The signs were unreadable and the pavilion roof was failing.

We did get a laugh from the bathroom signs. They left the old signs up instead of covering them up or removing them.

I spotted the National Geodetic Survey marker on overgrown steps when I was looking at the blackberries and grapes.

This felt like enough of a walk since we had the same distance to walk back, so we turned around and headed home.

It was 1.5 miles to the section of the park we walked to, so we had a 3 mile walk mostly along the canal.
It was an easy walk with lots of pleasant views and birds.
That looks like a very scenic walk along the canal. Nice bridge, too!

Trail looks to be dog friendly. (cough)

Yes indeed. Unfortunately, Nox is starting to slow down. Yesterday, she was having fun trotting around the RV park and even meeting a cat on a leash. Today, she doesn’t feel well and all she wants to do is sleep. Her shoulder really appears to be bothering her today. We haven’t been able to take her on long walks for a while now. I really wish we could do more for her shoulder.

Canal paths, where they still exist, make for easy walking – after all, canals are close to level, and the tow paths had to be mule friendly!
