Since you asked, the 13’9” bridge story.
When we first bought our RV at Couch’s RVs in Ohio in February of 2021, it was during an Arctic Vortex. We didn’t feel comfortable bringing the RV home in the awful road conditions we encountered on the way to Ohio.
We asked Couch’s if we could leave the RV there until better weather. Couch’s was happy to let us leave the RV in their lot.
In early March, we had a prediction of a beautiful week across the Midwest. I took another week off from work and we headed out to pick up the RV.
After we got the RV hitched up to the truck, we headed home using RV Trip Wizard for the first time. RV Trip Wizard is an RV safe GPS.
Imagine this, Bruce is driving a rig this large for the first time (63 feet long). I am navigating using RV Trip Wizard. It takes us through the middle of a small town with a right turn. So far, so good, even if it is nerve racking driving down the narrow streets.
We come to a stop for a red light at the top of a hill. There is a road to the left that we have no idea where it goes. There no road to the right. At the bottom of the hill is a railroad bridge over the road, with a sign of 13’ 9”.
We start panicking, as we can’t remember how tall the RV is and we don’t know if turning left is safe. I look up the RV height up on my phone. We are 13’ 4” tall. We’ve got 5” to spare, if the bridge height sign is correct and the front of the RV is level.
When the light changes to green, Bruce slowly crawls under the bridge. I think he was going one mile an hour. We had the windows rolled down so we could hear if there was any noise, such as ACs hitting the bridge.
We made it safely under the bridge and there was a large pull off on the shoulder of the road. Bruce pulled off the road and let the long line of cars behind us drive past while we recovered from the fright of the bridge.
We continued on our way and safely made it back to Golden, CO without anymore bridge scares.

There’s an old cartoon of a guy tiptoeing through a mine field and he has his eyes screwed tight and his fingers in his ears, expecting the worst. I imagine that was your feeling with that underpass. Sometimes it’s a game of inches.

It was a game of inches and we slipped under that bridge without a problem. I still wonder what it looked like from behind!

It was a frightening experience. Our hearts were pounding the whole time we were inching under that bridge. I was so glad we were able to pull off to the side to recover.
