Cody Park Railroad Museum in North Platte, NE

June 23, 2023

After our tour of the Golden Spike Tower, we rode the motorcycle to the Cody Railroad Museum. The last bit, Google sent us down a dirt road and showed us parking on the dirt road and climbing over the tall fence to get to the railroad museum.

It was easier to ride to the parking lot and walk in through the gate. The road to the parking lot is paved, so if you go, make sure Google isn’t sending you on a Mission Impossible.

This post has a lot of pictures since I love trains and want to share my excitement with you.

The museum has two trains, a steam engine and a diesel engine.

This is a hands on museum, in that you could tour the engines and some of the cars.

We then toured the cars attached to the Challenger engine. The first car had various railroad items.

The second car was a mail car. I loved the mail car. They had cubbies for sorting letters going no to various cities in Colorado.

After the mail car was a caboose. I don’t think I’ve ever been inside one before. I do wish I could’ve climbed up to see the upper windows, but I followed the rules.

The other train engine was a massive diesel engine. They allowed you to sit in the engineer’s seat.

There was also a small station that had been saved and restored.

This was a fun stop and if you are love trains, getting to see the historic Challenger is a thrill.

  1. I really enjoyed the train information and photos, Julia! I also had to laugh at “easier to drive to the parking lot and walk in through the gate.” Once coming back from Bruce, MS to Oxford, my GPS sent me down a dirt road with trees arching over the road. Just for fun, I kept driving on it to see where it went–which was just a loop and then back to the highway. I learned to never assume a GPS in Mississippi would get you where you wanted to go.

    1. It is a lot of fun! The kids (big and small) were having a blast. One older gentleman was telling his great-grandson about his railroad days and the different types of engines he controlled. This museum and the Golden Spike Tower make this a worthwhile stop for train lovers.
