Thanksgiving Menu from the 1970’s
I come from a very large family on both sides. This was what I remember being served at Thanksgiving. Sometimes my Aunt Virginia would make gumbo.

Cheese Ball and Crackers
Deviled Eggs
Salad
Coleslaw
Iceberg Lettuce Garden Salad
Macaroni Salad
Dinner
Creamed Corn
Green Beans with Bacon
Mashed Potatoes
White Rice
Gravy
Black-Eyed Peas
Collard and Turnip Greens
Baked Sweet Potatoes with Butter

Cranberry Jelly
Sunbeam Flake (Brown and Serve) Rolls with Butter
Cornbread Sticks
Dessert

It was fun to remember the huge Thanksgiving dinners from my childhood. I am sure I left out some things, but there was enough food to feed between 30 and 50 people.

Wow – what a spread! I bet if you look in the freezer there are still some leftovers. Not the desserts, of course, they always seem to (cough) disappear.

I am sure there were leftovers at the time, but you are right, the desserts were always gone.

Fun to hear about foods at a Southern Thanksgiving. I am from the Midwest, but once during college I spent Thanksgiving in Massachusetts where there are many more Italians. I was amazed that they served a pasta dish…I don’t remember exactly what.

It was fun to take a walk down memory lane. We always spent Thanksgiving at one of my grandmothers’ homes.

My aunts all brought something and both my grandmothers loved to cook.
