Thanksgiving Menu from the 1970’s

I come from a very large family on both sides. This was what I remember being served at Thanksgiving. Sometimes my Aunt Virginia would make gumbo.

Boiled Shrimp

Cheese Ball and Crackers

Deviled Eggs

Salad

Coleslaw

Iceberg Lettuce Garden Salad

Macaroni Salad

Dinner

Creamed Corn

Green Beans with Bacon

Mashed Potatoes

White Rice

Gravy

Black-Eyed Peas

Collard and Turnip Greens

Baked Sweet Potatoes with Butter

Roasted Turkey (Sometimes Wild Turkey)

Cornbread Dressing

Ham

Cranberry Jelly

Sunbeam Flake (Brown and Serve) Rolls with Butter

Cornbread Sticks

    1. It was fun to remember the huge Thanksgiving dinners from my childhood. I am sure I left out some things, but there was enough food to feed between 30 and 50 people.

  1. Fun to hear about foods at a Southern Thanksgiving. I am from the Midwest, but once during college I spent Thanksgiving in Massachusetts where there are many more Italians. I was amazed that they served a pasta dish…I don’t remember exactly what.
