Update on my Father-in-Law

Bruce and his siblings had a confence call with my father-in-law’s doctor this morning.

The doctor was very straight forward about what was happening. Bruce said the doctor was brutally honest. Bruce’s dad’s heart function is at 15% and almost no lung capacity. His body is shutting down. Bruce’s dad has not regained his cognitive ability. The doctor did hedge, but seemed to think a month would be the longest Bruce’s dad could last. The doctor recommended home hospice.

Bruce and his siblings agreed that home hospice would be best. They hope that he will be more comfortable at home. My niece is a nurse and has volunteered to go take care of my FIL.

My FIL’s children will all go at the same time say goodbye.

We had hoped at the beginning of this medical crisis that he would recover. We understand he will not. He has lived a long life (he is 91) with service to his fellow humans. He is much loved by his family and friends.

  5. It is hard to say goodbye. It is time to say goodbye. I’m glad he can be cared for by a competent family member, with hospice support. i am moved to tears by the love and caring evidenced by the family response. May his last days be peaceful and pan free.

  8. Julia and Bruce, please know you are in our thoughts and prayers during this sad time. How wonderful that he is so well loved and will be surrounded by his children. It seems that he enjoyed good health for many years – longer than many. I know the loss will still hurt. Hopefully, remembering the good and knowing that others care will ease it – if only a bit.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I made the last real meal he was able to eat and somehow it comforts me. On Christmas Eve, I made a standing rib roast, mashed potatoes, salad and mixed vegetables. He enjoyed it so much and ate with gusto.

  9. There really are no words that can provide the solace your family deserves. Your father in law’s entry into hospice will help his transition and you will without doubt make the most of this chance to say goodbye to a good man and a loved man. His 91 years will of course live on. In Bruce’s memory, yours, and in all the family’s memories. I wish you all gentle warmth at the end of life.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words. My father-in-law was a fighter and this last fight was too much . I find comfort in the thought he will be with his wife soon.
