Finishing the Sweet Potato Harvest

September 27, 2025

I was eager to finish digging up the sweet potatoes, so I was up at sunrise on Saturday (September 20).

Surprisingly, in a sweet potato flower blooming on a sweet potato in a grow bag on my patio, there was a bumble bee.

I watched Nox until she was tired of sniffing around the yard.

I put Nox back inside and took some more pictures of the sunrise. I got ready to harvest the sweet potatoes.

There was one sweet potato vine left in the garden; it was growing up a tomato plant. The sweet potato blooms were beautiful with the sunlight shining through the petals.

Here’s the first sweet potato from bed A2. I had planted Georgia Jet in it.

Unfortunately, about half of the Georgia Jet sweet potatoes had split.

I dug up two 5-gallon buckets from bed A2.

Bed A1 did not do well. I had planted fewer slips in the bed since I had peas and tomatoes on the sides of the bed. Several of the sweet potatoes were small, making me think we should’ve delayed harvesting them. I only got a half 5-gallon bucket.

Bruce came out as I finished digging up the last sweet potatoes. (His timing was perfect! How did he know the work was done?)

Here are the sweet potatoes curing in the shed.

I am pleased with the sweet potato harvest overall. I am waiting to harvest the sweet potatoes in the grow bags until the middle of October.

I got cleaned up, ate breakfast, and relaxed for a while.

In the afternoon, I worked on the picture of Juneau.

Beginning of Picture

After several hours, Bruce came in and said, “You’ve been working on the picture for a long time. Your hand needs a break.” I realized he was right and put down my pencil.

We had a beautiful sunset.
