Movers Canceled and Deposit Refunded (Hopefully)

October 15, 2024

Bruce and I decided to cancel the movers.

My blog pal Leslie, from theadventuresofbiteydog.com, had mentioned that a friend of hers had her property held hostage until she paid the movers twice as much as quoted and this was after the movers had taken a month to make a three day move.

This rang loud alarm bells to me. The lack of communication and the promise to do something and not following through had made us very nervous. Who gives a two day window to move? Different groups at the moving company had different days that the move was happening.

We had put down a deposit for the move, so after discussing it, Bruce and I decided to cancel the move.

I got a call from the QA guy and he said he couldn’t cancel the move, but he’d send me an email with the link. He mentioned I should receive the email in about 90 seconds. After tens minutes, I called the only person who had actually responded to my communications. She sent me a link to cancel the move and walked me through it. It was very simple. I then asked, “Is the move canceled now?” The answer was no, not really. They would respond to the generated email from the form and call me. Then the move would be canceled.

Okay, then. While considering what I should do, I realized I had a very strong ally in the credit card company.

I called the credit card company to dispute the transaction. The credit card company was great.

When I received a call from the movers to find out if I really wanted to cancel, my answer was yes. I was then told I wouldn’t get my deposit back. (I could’ve understand if they kept $100-$200 for their trouble.) I mentioned I had called the credit card company and disputed the charge.

Suddenly, I was offered half my deposit back. This made me very suspicious and I told him I needed to discuss this offer with the credit card company.

I called the credit card company and told them what happened. The agent said, “It sounds very suspicious to me.” I explained I wasn’t given any information on what would happen if we canceled the move. She looked at the movers site and told me she didn’t see anything. The agent said, “I recommend that you let us fight it out for you.” I thanked her.

Later in the day, someone higher up in the company called and wanted to work it out without the credit card company being involved.

I told him that the credit card company said to let them fight it out. He said, “okay” and hung up.

A few minutes later, I received an email with a refund confirmation for the entire amount.

I called the credit card company to let them know, but also mentioned that I didn’t trust the moving company. I explained what had happened.

The agent said they would keep the dispute open until I received the refund.

My credit card company has been great throughout this process. I felt I had a very strong advocate who could help me resolve the issue.

This situation made me realized am I still am not back to myself after my mom’s funeral. I’ve also been worried about my 90 year old father-in-law. He had hip replacement surgery today. It went well, which is a huge relief to us and the rest of the his family.

On to something different, Bruce loaded up the truck and he is bringing most of our yard tools home along with most of the fragile items. He’ll be leaving in the morning.

Bruce is absolutely miserable right now. The poison ivy has spread all over his body.

I am so grateful to my friend Jeanne, from ajeanneinthekitchen.com, and her husband for inviting Bruce to dinner tonight. Nothing like a great meal and great friends to make things better.

  1. I am so glad you thought quickly and made the decisions you did! Soon Bruce will be back, your house will be your home, and you can both buy Hazmat suits to keep yourselves save from the dreaded poison ivy!

      1. Our yard and pasture was not kept up, leading to this hideous amount of the dreaded poison ivy. Our next door neighbor has cows, two donkeys, and chickens. They seem to do a good job of keeping the dreaded poison ivy away. On the other side (in some of the pictures, you can see another house) they mow very low, which helps keep poison ivy out. I expect their woods behind their house is just as full of poison ivy as ours. They don’t maintain their woods.

Behind our house is a sheep farm. He or the sheep seem to keep it off the back fence.

      2. I have been thinking about it. It looks like our property and the property with the animals was one property in the past. There is a large gate between our pasture and his. I would be concerned about any possible issues the animals might have on our property. There’s all sorts of things that animals could get hurt on and I just don’t want to take the risk.

  2. Double bummer with Bruce’s poison ivy and the bad moving company. Getting the credit card company involved was a good idea. I hope you get your refund back, and also find a more reputable moving company going forward.
