After our walk in historic downtown Anniston, AL on April 23, 2024, we geared up and rode to the Anniston Museum of Natural History.
I enjoy small museums and have been pleasantly surprised and impressed by some. The Anniston Museum of Natural History was more midsize than small and it was impressive! It is also an affiliate of the Smithsonian.
It is surrounded by gardens.

You start by paying at the front desk, then heading left into the prehistoric section.

They did an excellent job with the cave. It felt like a real cave.
After the cave, we came around a corner and saw this bear.

There was a room off to the side for weather, earthquakes and volcanoes. It was designed to be interactive and for children. (As big kids, we enjoyed it as well.)

The stuffed bird exhibit is historic and the work of one man, William Werner. If you would like more information, This Is Alabama has more information: https://www.thisisalabama.org/2021/03/23/alabama-museums-birds-of-the-americas-exhibit-is-a-treasure-of-rare-artifacts/

The Egyptian exhibit had two mummies. The mummies had been examined with X-rays in the 1970’s. There was a movie about how they examined one of the mummies with CT scans more recently. Here’s a link to the news story: https://www.wbrc.com/story/13488449/mummy-ct-scans-revealed-at-anniston-museum/

At the end of the exhibits, along the hallway wall to the front, were beautiful original pictures by John Audubon.

We headed over to the Berman Museum of World History, which will be another post.
The Anniston Museum of Natural History is well worth visiting if you are in the area.
Julia, A wonderful tour of Anniston – thanks! Howard

For a small town, it was an outstanding museum. The Berman Museum next door was also fascinating and well worth the visit.
