Vicksburg National Military Park

April 11, 2024

While we were in Vicksburg, MS, we rode the motorcycle around the Vicksburg National Military Park on March 29.

The weather was perfect for riding.

View of the Entrance from the Vicksburg Visitor Center

We rolled in and the gate was open. A sign said to purchase tickets for entry into the park at the Visitor Center.

We walked around outside of the Visitor Center admiring the canons and fortifications.

We walked into the Visitor Center and while Bruce was paying the entry fee, I got our Vicksburg Passports stamped.

The Visitor Center is a small museum and theater.

After walking through the Visitor Center, we geared back up and rode towards the main gate.

The entrance starts behind the former Union line. The road passes through the former Union and Confederate battle lines. The battle lines are marked and monuments to the soldiers and sailors who fought are scattered throughout the park.

The Missouri Monument remembered the Missouri Union Rļæ¼egiment and the Missouri Confederate Regiment that fought against each other at the spot. This was a brutal battle.

Illinois built a stunning monument listing all the men from Illinois who fought.

Grant tried to break through the Confederate lines twice. The Union soldiers broke through once, but reinforcements arrived to help the Texas Regiment push the Union soldiers back.

With the large number of deaths, Grant decided breaking through wasn’t going to work. Instead, he decided to lay siege to Vicksburg. The citizens and soldiers suffered greatly during the siege.

We spent all afternoon at the park and made a stop at the Cairo Museum. I will do another post about the Cairo.

Nox lifted up her head when we arrived home from our tour.

    1. I am not so much into battles and dates; I do respect the men and women who served. To see how they lived and fought is interesting to me. Vicksburg being a city that experienced a siege and how the commanding officers responded to the civilians in jeopardy is very interesting.
