White Sands National Park, New Mexico

June 7, 2022

While my ankle is still sore and swollen, I still want to get out and see things. I really wanted to see the White Sands National Park.

Bruce drove the truck to the Visitor Center and parked. It was about a 30 minute drive from the RV park to the Visitor Center.

We stopped at the Visitor Center and one of the rangers showed us a couple of chunks of selenite crystals. She explained how the wind and water turned the large crystals into sand. She demonstrated how soft the selenite was by rubbing two pieces together and getting sand.

We drove the truck to the park gate. We paid the entrance fee and got a map.

We mostly stayed in the truck. The view were spectacular. Please excuse some of the reflection in the pictures. We had the windows rolled up with the air conditioner running.

We did stop at the Interdune Boardwalk and walked along it. It was flat and seemed like the best place for some with a hurt ankle to walk. We saw the two different lizards.

We drove around the picnic areas.

Bruce drove to the Alkali Flat Trail. He climbed up a dune and assured me the views were spectacular.

We stopped at the gift shop. I couldn’t bring myself to pay $32 for a T-shirt.

We did see some barn swallows, their nest, and a model of the park.

Afterwords, we drove to BZ Rockin Burgers for lunch. Great choice!
