We had been waiting on our new Florida address before we could move forward with getting our Florida driver’s licenses.
Here’s the story so far.
Escapees sent the email with our new address via email last week on Tuesday. Bruce didn’t get it until Sunday. It appears his email service was having problems.
We got our appointments set up for to get our driver’s licenses on Monday. The site said to bring all marriage licenses involving name changes. So guess what we left in our Colorado safe deposit box? If you guessed our marriage license, give yourself 100 points!
Bruce was able to get his Florida driver’s license. He had to bring his state birth certificate, his SSN card, and his Colorado driver’s license. He also has to bring the letter from Escapees welcoming us to Florida. The tax collector’s department also wanted a second piece of mail, but they took another form.
Me, I had to cancel my appointment since I didn’t have my marriage license.
I spent an hour on the phone getting the insurance moved to Florida while Bruce got his driver’s license. Bruce wanted to get the truck registered, but they need proof of Florida insurance.
After Bruce got his driver’s license, we went outside and sat on the courthouse steps while I finished up the call with insurance company. 😒
I had asked the insurance company to fax the insurance information to the tax collector’s office. Bruce wanted to get the truck registered today. The insurance company didn’t fax the insurance cards, just the paperwork. The lady also pointed out the insurance paperwork had tomorrow’s date.
We could go ahead and get the VIN verification on the truck done, but we couldn’t title the truck until tomorrow due to the date on the paperwork.
Bruce had them verify the VIN on the truck. Tomorrow, we are taking the motorcycle to the library and printing out the insurance cards for all vehicles and the RV. We should be able to get the truck and motorcycle registered. 🤞
We are going to find out how we can get the RV registered, as there are no spots to park it at the tax collector’s office.
Once we got back to the RV, Bruce ordered a copy of our marriage license. They claim it will take 3 to 5 business days to find it and then they will ship it by UPS Air. The timing is going to be tight.
If we had started this process when Escapees sent us the email, we would be fine for timing. Stupid email delay!
If our marriage license had been brought with the rest of our important papers, that would’ve been fine. I am still unclear why someone thought the marriage license was not an important paper. 🤷♀️
I’ll let you know how it goes. I may be a Colorado citizen for a bit longer.

Ugh, that sounds like a bit of a drag. I hope you get it all sorted out quickly!

Getting our driver’s license for Colorado over 25 years ago was way easier. I am guessing so much has changed due to the TSA driver’s license requirements.

Thanks! I knew it was going to be painful here and there, but still today was a big headache for me.

That all sounds soo frustrating, but sounds like it will work out. I am always amazed when I hear about people moving multiple times in a short period of time due to all the updates that need to happen. Maybe they just don’t do that updates.

It is a lot of work, so maybe they don’t do the updates.

Julia,
Odd that they wouldn’t just accept your Colorado driver’s license instead of demanding your marriage license.

Yes, it was vey odd. They needed either a birth certificate and our marriage license to show the name change, or a passport to show I was who I said I was. It was very different from when we moved from Alabama to Colorado. Colorado just needed our Alabama driver’s license, but that was over 25 years ago.

It has become too easy – and too commonly done! – to fake a license. Sigh. If they could count on people being honest, it would be so much easier for everyone!

But I remember the mantra I had with my husband; “We are not in a hurry. We are not in a hurry. We are not in a hurry.” Said slowly, enough times to produce a smile….

Bruce kept reminding me of that. I still haven’t gotten the hang of retirement yet! It is starting to sink in!
