On September 25, I planted the former potato bed, the one we had covered with black heavy duty contractor bags. I planted radishes, Japanese greens, spinach, beets, lettuce, and carrots. I used the square foot garden method for planting each square foot. It took a lot longer than planting in rows. I don’t follow the square foot method completely. The link above will take you to the Square Foot Gardening Foundation, which has detailed information on square foot gardening.
Bruce gathered up downed branches in the reclaimed area, placing them into the tractor bucket. Once the bucket was full, he drove the tractor down the driveway and dumped the branches in the garage pickup area.
I was so hot and tired after all the planting that I didn’t water the newly planted seeds.
On September 26, I spent the morning watering the vegetable garden beds. We really need an irrigation system.
Bruce continued to put together his new computer. He ran several test to confirm everything was working correctly as he added more components.
After the cucumber tornado incident (see “Bruce Still Being Considered for Jury Duty and a Cucumber Tornado“), I tried to find a video on putting the attachment cap back on. I found an article that made it sound as though the attachment caps often come off. The article recommended having a spare in case you misplace the one from the mixer. I couldn’t find anything that described how to put the attachment cap back on. Given the lack of information, I decided that putting the attachment cap on must be so easy that you don’t need instructions. I realized later that the attachment caps are very different between the tilt-head and the bowl-lift mixers. The tilt-head cap is a simple plug and is not attached, while the bowl-lift mixer hub is attached. I have a bowl-lift mixer.
On September 27, using his dead blow mallet, Bruce put the attachment cap back onto the KitchenAid mixer. I tried out the Spiralizer attachment on one of the mealy apples. It worked without any problems. I could now use my KitchenAid attachments again!
I sliced down one side of the spiralized apple, making apple rings. I wanted to do a test to see if the mealy apples’ texture would not be a problem when dehydrated. The one apple would be my test subject to determine if the mealy apples could be successfully dehydrated.
On September 28, Bruce started his mowing again.
I spotted two Gulf fritillaries. One of them had damage to scales on the left top wing shown in the dorsal view.

I didn’t get a picture of the sunset on any of these days.
It’s okay to miss a sunset or so, because you give us so many gorgeous photographs of them.

We saw very few monarchs this year. Hopefully, we’re just not on their route.

I only saw a few. I’ll bet the Alabama Butterfly Atlas might have more information on their migration.

Here are the normal migration routes for Eastern Monarchs. https://www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/pollinators/Monarch_Butterfly/migration/index.shtml#:~:text=Traveling%20South%20East
I don’t know if the ones I saw were migrating and slightly off the normal route, or newly emerged from their chrysalis.

I am glad your Kitchen Aide mixer is back in business. Good luck with the mealy apples.

I dehydrated one apple and it was delicious. I just finished another batch. I still make a pie; we’ve got company on Thursday.

It was a big relief to get it operational without having to take it to a repair shop.

I miss beautiful sunrises and sunsets, too. Hope you can capture one again, Julia. You sound like you have a very bountiful garden.

I didn’t realize an attachment could slice apples for drying. How handy! 🍎 🍏 🍎

It works a treat. It will also peel them while slicing them. It can also be used on potatoes.

It is weird to think of planting in October! How long before you have produce? FYI I was gone for 2 weeks on 2 different back to back trips, so my routine has been very messed up and I am way behind on reading blog posts.

I am way behind as well, and I don’t have any excuse.
