On August 5, Bruce decided to set the burn pile on fire. He was dragging the hose to the burn pile, while I was heading to the blueberry circle to weed.
I only weeded for a couple of hours. This time I understood just how much work weeding the blueberry circle is.
Bruce had fun with the burn pile.
I watched from inside to protect my sinuses from the smoke.
Bruce came up to the front porch to watch the fire and get something to drink. While he was on the front porch, a hummingbird came up to the pink coneflower. This was about 6 feet from Bruce, He was able to get one picture before the hummingbird zoomed off.
After the fire died down, I came out and sat on the porch to watch the fire. I saw a cabbage white butterfly. They are pretty butterflies, but their babies eating habits are hard to swallow.
As evening approached, we got some rain which went a long way to putting out the fire. Bruce put out the remaining fire.
We were eating supper and missed the sunset.

I’d have been sorely tempted to stick a few foil wrapper ‘taters under the coals. Yum.

We’re so restricted because of the drought, horrible air quality and extreme wildfire conditions, I can’t even imagine a burn pile.

I understand why they have burn bands in Colorado. The fires are terrible there. I remember how awful the Marshall Fire was. It just tore through the houses in no time at all.
Here, we just have fires when we want. Farmers and construction companies will take a dozer and push trees and roots into a pile and burn them. They’ll often just leave them burning for days with no supervision at times.
We can still have forest fires in the South. We, as a family, Dad, Mom, me and my sisters with neighbors, fought a forest fire to keep it from getting on our farm in Mississippi. We had shovels to smack the fire to put it out. It seemed like hours, but I think it was probably only 30 minutes to an hour. We were lucky it didn’t get into the tree tops. I was covered in soot and had trouble breathing for a while after all that. After that experience, I have the greatest respect for firefighters.
The park rangers have control burns in the public forest here. One of my sisters is a park ranger and she supervises the burn control plans and helps with the control of fires.
It is so different how different fires are in the West compared to the fires in the South.
